Eagles in Alaska

Canada
September 16, 2016 8:22am CST
My sister and I took a cruise on the Ruby Princess to Alaska. We opted to take three trips off the ship for sightseeing. The first was in Ketchikan, Alaska. The name of the tour was Lighthouse, Totems and Eagles. We boarded a tour boat and spent hours enjoying the scenes and sights. We saw dozens of Eagles, some interesting Totem Poles and Lighthouses. The sights were breathtaking. I would do this day trip again. They also fed us lunch and snacks. It was raining that day but we learned it rained every day in Ketchikan. That area gets 14 feet of rain every year. We were protected from the rain on the boat but often stepped outside our comfort zone and took pictures in the rain. We both had rain slickers so we didn't get wet but the photos were not great because of the weather. This photo of a historic lighthouse on an island took us by surprise because an Eagle was sitting on top of the lighthouse. We saw dozens of Eagles in trees and flying around but this was a surprise only discovered while we were taking photos of the light house...it was a bonus. Here is a link to the tour, showing more photos of what we saw. To see the photos click on the photo gallery. There are photos of whales and seals in their gallery. We did see seals that day but didn't see any wales that day. Our next trip was all about wales...stay tuned.
During this Shore Excursion, enjoy a short, narrated tour through Ketchikan, Alaska en route to our private dock's rain forest setting to board your vessel, the Totem Princess or Lighthouse Endeavor. Relax in the heated main cabin or the open-air observati

@PainsOnSlate I would think it would be worth the time and money. I would really love to have a nice camera with a great zoom but they are just so expensive.

@PainsOnSlate We were in the southern part and the winter I had as a kid back in MO was worse than the one in southern Alaska.

@mom210 very interesting, it's nasty here in winter, I would have thought Alaska would be too but I bet it has something to do with the ocean so close.

I know a few who have lived there and loved it too, now I can understand why, it is beautiful. I might not like the winter though... the winter I live in is bad enough.

I'll bet if I were to go up there I'd freeze @PainsOnSlate to me anything under 60 is grounds for warm hoodies and coats and I'm betting it wasn't quite that warm where you were.

It was summer, it was cool but comfortable, the rain made us wear slickers, I brought warm clothes with me for our excursions but didn't really need them.

That sounds like a good excursion, I have never been to Alaska and my one cruise on Princess was a bit of a disaster so I have never done another.

@PainsOnSlate We had sickness on the ship and it made it hard to eat, they had to serve you the buffet and we had terrible food in the restaurant. Didn't like them at all. Staff was not nearly as friendly as Holland America or Royal Caribbean. I wouldn't use them again either. Entertainment wasn't great and it was hard to get a seat to see it. Just didn't enjoy it at all. We can talk details when we meet I will like hearing about yours in detail as well.

I'd like to know why you called it a disaster...I've been on several cruises and this last one was the worst as far as the ship. I didn't like Princess and probably won't use their ships again. I loved Alaska...

@BelleStarr Interesting... no sickness on the ship, the staff was good but the food was not fantastic, hated the buffet, loved the entertainment but had to get a seat at least an hour before... we'll talk later..

The closest we've been to Eagles was at Dollywood where she had an eagle sanctuary. Sounds like you had an interesting time.

I love eagles, they are so majestic! Last year, we had a pair of bald eagles take up residence somewhere in our city. One morning, in rush hour traffic, one of the eagles had swooped in low to scoop up something for breakfast, and got clipped by a car. The poor eagle sat dazed in the road after getting hit. Traffic came to a stop (remember, it was rush hour, on a main thoroughfare), and the police were called in. They set up barricades around the injured eagle sitting in the middle of the road, and then re-routed all the traffic away from the eagle. That eagle sat in the middle of the road all morning, and then sometime right before lunch, figured out he wasn't as hurt as he thought he was (maybe he got hungry), and he just took off and flew away! Thankfully, there seemed to be no lasting injury, because both the male and female eagle were seen flying around together just days later!

@PainsOnSlate It's the first nesting pair of eagles seen in our city in decades, so they wanted to make sure to protect them! We have tons of hawks and ospreys, but it was finally nice to see some eagles move in!

You are a lot closer to Alaska than I am, I hope you put it on your list, It was so different. No place Ive ever visited touched me the way the water, the mountains, the glaciers, the history, the obvious scary signs of global warming touched me last week. I know if I went straight north from where I live I could see glaciers and some of the tings I saw there, but the massive mountains were pretty big.

I saw one flying over Lake Ontario a couple of years ago, along with the news that the Eagles were back into Ontario after being gone for a long time, You might see them now in your neck of the woods if you have some big waters around you.
