This year 2 of my grandchildren were old enough for the Area 5 Youth State Fair lock in at the church where Allen and I went on the mission trip with. Allen and Ariel both went as well as grandchildren of another member, and another teen from our church. In my picture is the group of 5 from our church. They had been playing the game of Life and were putting it away when I took the picture. The evening started with the 5:30 pm contemporary service at the church. Afterwards we walked to the fair. Let me back up a bit. I had planned on going to the church service because it's one that I like, but then just leaving the kids there for the night. It didn't work out like that as we found out that our group needed an adult sponsor for the night. Hubby and I were going to the fair anyway with those tickets we got so we said we would go to the fair with the group. Walking. I couldn't believe we were going to walk to the fairgrounds from the church. It was just a 9 block walk, but I wasn't prepared for that either. Our church took money from the youth fund for the kids. Enough to pay for the gate passes for each youth plus giving them $17 in cash to do with as they pleased. My daughter made up snack bags with oatmeal creme cookies, peanut butter bars, m&m's and pixie sticks for each of our youth plus also gave them a choice of bottles of soda to take along to the fair. She also had a sheet of ride tickets giving each one 6 tickets to start with. Another youth also brought ride ticket sheets to share. The fair was fun. Allen doesn't do rides and spent most of his money on food and drink anyway. I couldn't believe the rides that Ariel got on with the other kids! Once we walked back to the church after the fair, we mixed kids up and did some get to know you games. Once those were done the pastor handed each table a bulletin and told them to make a skit from anything in the bulletin. Our group did a skit on offering. Before that Steve went home, leaving me to be the one to stay the night with the kids. They had pretty much full run of this extra large church. They played 3 movies on the big screen with the last one ending at 4 am. That was when the lights went off. Most of the kids were finally sleeping by then. My sinuses started acting up. I didn't end up getting to sleep until about 5:30 am, only to be woke up before 7 am for breakfast. Breakfast was breakfast casseroles, fruit and orange juice. Oh yes, we had pizza when we got back to the church from the fair too. The kids had a great time and it was so good to see Ariel open up and have a good time too. She's pretty shy. Next year Araya will be old enough for the lock in too. Hopefully maybe I can get a different adult to be the sponsor! This post ended up pretty long so I will end it by wishing you a good Monday!

It was pretty fun even for me. I still stay up until 2 am even on Saturday night with church in the morning, but by that 2 am I was wishing I was asleep.

@marsha32 I have never been a night owl. Occasionally I have been up to see the sunrise, but this has been many years ago.

That is so perfect for kids! When I worked at a church, we did something very similar and the kids got so much out of it! While they were all sleeping upstairs (with some great adults supervising), I was sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor of my office downstairs. I had someone wake me up and we got together in the morning for breakfast together before parents began showing up to take all the kids home. Those were some of my favorite times there!

I miss the lock ins we used to do with the teens at our own church. Maybe I can talk to the man in charge of youth group and get one set up. We don't have many children in our church.

@marsha32 Youth is always well served by these lock ins where they can discuss things that bother them, learn new things and just have some clean fun (without their phones and computers for a change).

No wonder you are so tired. I only did a few lockins.

I'm still wondering why Saturday night.... I mentioned not wanting to take the kids home as then they won't want to go to church. The comment back to me was that they attended worship the night before.

Oh man, that sounds like a bad night with the sinuses. I see your daughter is following your example, making those snack bags. You are so productive and thoughtful, I'm sure she has learned this from you. I hope you can get your rest today, Marsha. Knowing you, you probably won't lol, but maybe a nap is in order.

I did take a 30 minute nap today. Thanks for the compliment that she learned of making the snack bags from following my example.
