Petting the feral

My friends know I have a lot of cats, including 3 feral ones and a semi-feral one. Tonight I went into the kitchen and saw Elmer, one of the feral cats, sound asleep, cuddled up next to Taj, my oldest cat. I quietly reached over and gently started massaging Elmer's side. He continued sleeping. I got in like 8 or so massages when Taj got up, because he wanted me to pet him. Elmer groggily opened his eyes, then looked over to see who was touching him. His eyes shot open with an "OH SH!T!" look and he scrambled away. I started laughing and slamming my hand against the fridge, it was SO funny. The roomie wanted to know what was so funny. When I breathlessly told her, she agreed that it was THAT funny!

Yes, it is funny, not for Elmer, poor cat.

He will survive being touched. He's so silly about it.

@LadyDuck I don't think he will. He really is very feral. However, last night he was sitting in a chair near us when the rookie and I were sitting at the table.

Lucky you, to get to pet a feral is rare and then for a feral to sleep so soundly it didn't hear you means it's probably quite old.

No, he's not that old, he's just an inside feral cat. He's not been outside since we trapped him about 6 weeks old. I say "not outside" but we do have a catio, but that isn't that different from being safe inside since nothing can get him. So, he's never had to be as alert as a feral cat outside. And, remember, he was cuddled up with another cat. I had been quiet coming into the room, so he didn't have my normal noise level to alert him a human was nearby.

I hope so @ElicBxn it would be nice to be able to actually hold her and brush her, she gets those awful clumps in her fur which I want to cut out and has actually allowed me a few minutes to do that once in a while. She has extremely silky fine fur that mats up all the time.

It was entirely like that! He was fine until he saw it was me! He just slays me, I mean, this cat has a look that if looks could kill... if you know what I mean...

@Hatley Tardar, or "Grumpy Cat" looks upset because she just looks that way, Elmer has this glare he reserves for us "two legs." He doesn't give that look to other cats, he's fine with other cats. In fact, when he was waking up, he was fine and when he realized it was me, it wasn't his glare, it was pure alarm. I'm sure when I see him next, that glare will be back.

He seemed to be unthankful to your petting him.How long it will take to tame a feral cat?

It isn't that hard to "flip" a kitten, but I was working when I caught him and his sisters. I am fine with them not being friendly but it is fun to pet Elmer because he gives us such dirty looks.

@ElicBxn lol some cats are like that! I have one that I took in that a neighbour threw out and he is so full of personality. I have never had a cat like him before.

@Happy2BeMe Elmer is so feral but he is also food obsessed. He won't come close but is always on the lookout for food.

He sounds like a character and seems very chilled out for a feral.

He has lived here since he was 6 weeks old so he doesn't know any place else.
