Mendenhall Glacier

Canada
September 21, 2016 6:15am CST
As we flew into Seattle to catch our ship to Alaska, I saw a lot of snow on the mountains below us. I wondered how all that snow got there when it was still summer... I found out later all that snow was Glaciers. Just the thought of Glaciers awed me. Imagine how I felt when I saw my first on up close and personal. Every morning when I woke up, I would walk out on our deck on the cruise ship with my camera. Our third day out what I saw amazed me, there were ice cubes floating on the water. Three of them are in the photo above. Our excursion that day was to visit Mendenhall Glacier and then get on a boat to look for whales. The Glacier took my breath away, I have never seen anything like it. There were hikes to take and walks to walk. In the visitor center there were movies about the glacier, then and now, and views in the observation area. The history was there and if you don't believe Global Warming is actually real, you should read up on it and know it is real and very scary...

Glaciers do not melt in summer. We have many glaciers here in Switzerland and unfortunately, with the global warming, some have started to melt.

@PainsOnSlate I agree, it means that there is something wrong and we could expect problems in the future.

I know these have been around for thousands of years but they are melting more every year. That is very scary.

The same is happening in Glacier Park Montana, where I love to hike.

I find glaciers fascinating. I've hiked on some in Glacier National Park (Montana). But they're receding fast.

@PainsOnSlate What I'm still willing to debate is the extent to which humans are involved. The science is probably beyond me.

@TheHorse The science isn't that difficult either. We've been learning about it for years now. Pollution is here to stay until someone says STOP...

This is the first one I've ever seen, Impressive and melting fast because of Global Warming...that thing that Stupid Trump thinks isn't happening.

So many people think its hog wash, when we can see smog and smell the air it should be enough to understand we are killing the planet...

People just don't realize how dangerous all the glacier's melting will cause @PainsOnSlate and that doesn't even count the dislocation of all the Polar Bears.

Beautiful photo! The only glaciers we have seen were in Norway. Must go to Alaska.

No matter what we saw there it was completely and totally different from what we saw growing up in upstate NY, New England and North east Canada. I would like to go back and spend more time there.

@PainsOnSlate they say the fire that happened in Ft. mcMurray could happen in certain other cities too. Like Prince Albert, SK. I did see glaciers in Jasper National Park as a child and I have seen them since. It is quite a difference.

@paigea Yep. I've hiked on Grinnell Glacier in Glacier Park several times. The Grinnell Glacier of today looks like a blue lake compared to the majestic Grinnell Glacier of my childhood.

Awesome photos, I can't imagine what it must have been like to live on these back in the ice age.

I looked it up and it was interesting to read about. I always thought that humans came after the ice age, I guess, basically they did although there were some ape/ human around trying to stay alive...during the ice age.

These pictures are breathtaking and beautiful. You did a great job capturing the beauty of them. I still remember how I felt the first time I seen an Iceberg when I was visiting Newfoundland. It was simply amazing and that was in June.

The pictures were magnificent, but sad to see so much black dirt on some of those chunks of ice. I'll bet that the air smelt a lot cleaner up there.

The dirt is on all of them i would think, as they melt you see years of dirt flying thorough the air that landed on the ice. its like our snow in the spring, dirty and ugly but recently dirty because of the melting.
