Another busy frustrating day. My first of two interviews proved to be a long open day morning at a college. It felt odd walking in among mostly sixth form teenage students. Security started asking to see my permission card before I even got to the reception to pick it up. The event, attended by 70 applicants in pursuit of 20 places on a course, proved to be a basic introduction to what the course consists of, with applicants having to choose whether to go for driving, portering or administrative roles. I went for admin positions as the others involves skills and qualifications I lack or hours of work I can’t do due to lack of transport. Tutors pitched their courses and answered a few questions before we completed long application forms and left. We were given bottles of mineral water for attending. I should know by next Friday how my application form was received. It had taken me over an hour to get to the college and now I rushed back to the welfare centre for my second interview, this time for a call centre role. My name hadn’t been given to the interviewer but she saw me first as other applicants hadn’t arrived. She just told me about the job, which amounts to just being sales work on the phones, and invited me to a follow up assessment tomorrow. I was promised I’d get an e-mail of further details later today but the e-mail never arrived. I see my welfare advisor in the morning so I’ll hopefully find out what is going on then. After a quick lunch and a little shopping, I came home. Arthur Chappell

Call centre work is horrendous. Not many can tolerate it.

@egdcltd I hate it though the welfare people seem determined to press me into it again

@arthurchappell It's pretty soul destroying work for all but a small percentage. Does the welfare centre have specific targets for people fixed up with jobs, even if they quit? I'm wondering, because there are always vacancies at call centres - I know people who've done it and none lasted more than a few weeks at most - so it's easy to get someone "into work" by getting them into a call centre. The fact that they don't last might be irrelevant.

@egdcltd safest not to quit a job as the DWP can see that as refusing to work - once in a call centre it is best to endure it until the company fires you for not hitting targets but that can take a while - if you do hit targets then the pressure is off anyhow - it is the majority under-attainers who suffer at such centres - the few good sellers, and there are some, tend to get away with anything they like

Sounds like an eventful day. I bet you are really jumping with enthusiasm at the possibility of getting another selling job. Ugh!

@arthurchappell ......Sad that you have to waste your time like that. You know you won't be of any good to them. Maybe if you put the reason you left your last job on the ap.

@celticeagle given my track record in sales you would think they'd avoid me but they are desprate enough to take anyone crazy enough to apply and the welfare people exploit that

@celticeagle they don't seem interested in previous work records sadly - hinted at a few things like being a credit risk only to find they don't worry about that even though their application form says they do.

It has been a busy day. I have heard from people that sales work on the phones is pretty frustrating. I hope you can find a better job.

I would have thought a call centre job was the last thing you'd want, after your last experience.

Good luck. I don't think I would be any good at sales work on the phone.
