June 16 - A Few Years Back

I remember the date because it was my dad's birthday. My kids were young, my oldest somewhere around 12 and my youngest around 7. My husband and I had to make a very quick trip to the local grocery store for stamps, that's all. We weren't gone more than five minutes tops. When we got home, the boys were gone. We looked everywhere. We combed the neighborhood, asked all their friends and no one had seen them. I called the police, and they started looking. No luck until ... They told us they were going to dredge the river since we lived close to the Fox. I was a basket case when they told me that. And then they found them. Not in the Fox, not even close. What they had done was take the railroad trestle - not a wise idea - and went exploring and found a park and a picnic in progress, so they crashed it and had a great time at the Boy Scout picnic. My younger son still shakes his head at me that I would have the police out looking for them when they were having so much fun. Yeah, fun for them. I was frantic. This is in response to a post by @celticeagle. Kids can sure give you gray hair early in life. Do you have a story to tell? Thanks for reading. Picture of my children at my daughter's wedding reception 4 years ago.

I lost a four year old at a church picnic. I was beside myself. (A phrase you hear, but don't really comprehend until you lose a child in a public park.). Half an hour later she showed up . She had accompanied the older children on a scavenger hunt. She scared ten years off my life.

I remember as a kid my older brother was babysitting my sister and I. He sat us infront of the TV, and made some excuses to scare us. While he left with his friends for 3 hours as we were so scared to move off the chairs.

Did your parents ever find out he left you two alone while he went off with his friends?

I can understand the feeling . As parents , we need to know where and how our children are doing at all times . If not , we will really get frantic .

Oh my! Sometimes kids have no idea of the worry they cause us.

The older they get the more problems they seem to get into. I'm glad they are all adults now and responsible for their own actions.

I'd be out of my mind... We were at a gathering on a park when my boys were around 3 to 7 years old. My husband were with the oldest two on the other side of the park, and I had the youngest two. I held them both in one hand each as there were many people around when my 4-year old asked for a donut. I let go one hand to just turn around and reached for a donut provided on one of the tables... And before I even had a chance to hand it to him, I turned around and realized my youngest (whose hand I let go for few seconds) had disappeared! I was super panicky! I grabbed my one son and started running around looking for my other son. To my relief, I then saw him in the arms of one of the men from the gathering. I didn't know him, but he said he saw my son crying from being lost so he held him up so that my son might be able to see me or I'd be able to see him. Thank God all turned out well so quickly, but I had lost my mind during the longest few minutes before I spotted him. Toddlers are so quick!

Yes they are. I'm glad you found him within a few minutes. I suppose he added some gray hairs that day.

I have no children, but I remember several things I did with my younger brother when we were kids that gave gray hair to our parents.

@just4him My poor mother got a scare once, when we were vacationing on the Mediterranean. We went out with friends on a small boat, the boat flipped and most of us were unable to swim. She did not know, but she was unable to find us. A fisherman rescued us and our friends.
