I don't always sleep well and am usually up a few times over night. The odd time when I'm really tired I do sleep well but not always. I have developed a few tricks to make me sleepy, which may help you too!
The first thing I have is a powdered natural health drink called 'Calms'. It is just a powdered form of magnesium that you add to warm water and sip a bit. Kind of tastes like the old Alka Seltzer for heartburn- but I think they are both mineral-based so that's the reason why. This drink mostly does the trick but some nights sleep can be stubborn.
If i still can't sleep, I will drink a half cup of warmed milk that I have heated up in the microwave and will do this up to two times. That is, if it doesn't work right away, but usually it does. There's a protein in the milk that is calming.
At one time I also had a night herbal tea with a bit of melissa and valerian in it and it was great too, But my milk and the powdered magnesium usually do the trick. It's frustrating not sleeping so i am glad I have these little tricks to help. The other trick is watching the weather channel---LOL! The music puts me right over... What do you do if you can't sleep?

If I'm desperate to sleep right away cuz I have an early morning, I'll heat a bit of milk too and that usually does the trick for me. I can generally force myself to sleep when I go to bed, the problem arises when I get up to use the bathroom in the night. If it's beginning to get light in the room or my husband is snoring, it will take me longer to fall asleep again if even can. Sometimes, but not too often, I'll stay up longer than I should just to ensure I can sleep when my head hits the pillow.

@MarymargII reading a book makes me sleep as well but it only works with books that I have finished reading before. If it is my first time reading the book, I don't get sleepy at all.

@BelleStarr I should have added that a Tylenol will do the trick - I'll have to try Advil. :)

Well then, Anna- you are going to have to give herbal teas or even a capsule of Valerian a try. The powdered magnesium is a real help to me.

@MarymargII I usually avoid taking anything before going to sleep, but a warm bath immediately after going to bed, then complete silence and darkness can make me feel relaxed enough to be able to sleep.

I usually just have 2% and warm it in the microwave- but I think any milk will have it- it's in the milk and not the fat - Get some powdered magnesium or even just the caplets and take a few. Also helps your bones and prevents irritability and aids muscle tension. Great for sleeping and all natural!

Looks like Samson won't need any of your ideas.
Warm milk and turmeric before bed is what I do.
