I Am Back

I am not really sure what the day till hold. I really am never sure about that. My training is over. It gets me about half of my continuing education hours for the year. I need twenty. I receive eight, or maybe ten for this class. It is a class for non violent crisis intervention. We did most of the book work on Tuesday night. Last night we did the physical portions and the test. Although we basically simulated the blocks, grabs and holds, I am sore all over today. The point of the class is to recognize when someone is becoming out of control and hopefully avert a complete meltdown. It has some self defense components and some restraint components. You only use the restraints as a last resort and then you have paperwork to fill out about the incident that is kept on the state and national level. I have had this class twice before. We had a child meltdown yesterday. I do not ever envision using these techniques with him. It was an instance of refusing to come in from recess. It just turns into a situation of waiting him out. He has health needs that mean he should not be outside in the heat for as long as he was. I was out there too. So this is Thursday. After hubby gets home from work, we will pick up the new stove. We will also eat out, and we know it. It is a plan not an impulse thing. It is how we have a meal together and still get the errands done we need to do. Thursday is even better than Hump Day Wednesday this week. Hope your week is fine.

Our son took a 2-day crisis intervention course similar to this a few years ago.

I feel it is good training to know the self defense in this day and age. It will even be useful in day to day life, unfortunately. On the other hand I found myself wondering if the de escalating part of it should be required of law enforcement, etc.

@GardenGerty There are some sectors of our policing that requires it. Our son is a social worker, and he began working in the group homes for minors sector, hence the need for this training.

I have done de-escalation training, which to me, was all common sense but to some people isn't. Anyway, have never trained in self defense or restraint. I hope you never have to worry about those. I hope you have a wonderful meal with your hubby.

The Golden Asian Buffet was good. I am learning how to monitor my intake even at buffet meals. You do have to sometimes block a kick or a grab, I guess I never have thought of it as self defense. I also trained at how to loosen the grip of a drowning person at one point, which is also self defense but was part of a water rescue class. Common sense is often uncommon.

there is a difference between refusing to come inside though, and attacking say, the wall with their face. had a boy who would slam his face in a wall, he got tucked into holds alot to prevent self harm

Little guy who refuses to come inside has medical condition that means it is unhealthy to stay out too long. Could lead to serious consequences. He also bangs his head when he cannot express himself, or when angry, or when he has a headache. . . .but we do not want to put him in holds because certain individuals enjoy that kind of contact and will act out to promote it.

@GardenGerty I guess one has to weigh the consequences, if its super hot the danger might out weight feeding into his need to be held.

It was a good meal. I think if we all thought about what causes others to have anxiety it would help. Many acting out events begin with anxiety first off.

I'm glad your training is over and you get credit for the class. I think I missed about you getting a new stove. Is it a fancy new one, or one that is easy to use?

This is one of the simplest stoves there are. Less to go wrong that way. We had gone into a Sears Outlet store on impulse and paid about half what it would cost new cause we also were able to use a 20 % off sale.

@GardenGerty I have been through that training. I have only needed to use it once, I was glad to never have to use it again. Enjoy your dinner out.

I think we use some of the deescalation techniques without knowing it. It certainly is not something you want to physically put into practice on an every day basis.

@GardenGerty I typically had to use the no touch de-escalation techniques with the type of students I had. I am glad I only needed to use the physical techniques one time.

Oh the times I ended up being the one to stay outside and talk a child into coming in when they refused....way too many times to count, and these were not emotionally or mentally disturbed children!

You would be quite good at it. You were just with kids who mostly did not want to quit playing when it was time. This little guy gets something in his head and he thinks it is a game.

It is interesting this class about non violent crisis intervention. I think to remember we had something similar when I was a student.

There are many forms of this training. I think they may all boil down to listening and respect, and caution.
