Electronics and Kids

This morning on the Today Show that had a very interesting segment about kids, the amount of time they spent looking at screens and how focused they are while doing so.
Did you know that the average child spends up to 7 hours a day focused on an electronic screen?
While they are focused on that screen they seem to be oblivious to what is going on around them. They did a little experiment to prove their point.
With one child, a little girl 6 years old, the had the mother walking back and forth carrying a big red sign, the girl never looking up. The mother then crashed cymbals together, she never looked up. The brother moved around in a bright clown suit, she never looked up.
So, while she was focused on the screen she didn't see or hear anything else going on around her.
To me this was a bit frightening. What if there were a fire, would she notice it or hear people calling to her?
Personally, I think they do tend to spend to much time on electronics. I wish they could focus as deeply on their schoolwork.
What do you thin?

My grandson is this way too. He comes home and gets something to eat, might chat with us a bit and then he is online until bed time. I don't have a problem with it because I figure he could be doing a lot of other things a lot less positive than the games he plays. I think if he was concentrating like this on homework or something like that I'd worry more. He is smart and healthy and enjoys time playing his games. I'm not too worried.

@HazySue .....Yes, but he doesn't. He even had the opportunity to play Grand Theft Auto and he didn't like it. So I was happy about that. It was brought here by mistake by a friend of my daughter's boyfriend. We were all curious about it and so we put it on and it was terrible. So, I must say that I like my grandson's choices in that arena. He mostly watches a narration of a guy playing a game that he likes on YouTube. Even the music he chooses is very nice.

@celticeagle he sounds like he uses his brain to make good choices. Many of the kids like the 'head banging and/or foul mouth music and games with a lot of killing in them.

I don't think, I'm pretty sure kids and adults spent too much time looking at screens.

That is a long time for a child to be staring at a screen. And to see how it affects them, showing how that young girl didn't notice anything else going on around her. Scary. If we had a child that young, they would definetly have a time restriction on electronics. Guess that would make me a "mean" Mom. Have a blessed day
