I never would have thought that my pressure cooker would do such a good job...

Well... I did a first. I was in the mood to make some spaghetti sauce, since I have not had any in a while. However, I took a nap, and got a late start. I normally like to simmer my sauce for about an hour, so the flavors will fuse together. But due to the hour, I did not feel like eating at 10 pm, because I would have had to fry the meat first. Anyway... The Lord has given me many cool ideas over the years, where cooking is concerned. Tonight... He gave me the idea to cook my sauce in my pressure cooker. I've never thought of that before. So... I dropped in the raw meat, onions, mushrooms, tomato sauce, and all the herbs and spices, I use to make my sauce into the pot; then added a little water to top it off. After the pressure rose, I let it cook for about 10-15 minutes. Then I let out the steam, opened the pot...and I had perfectly cooked meat, and the sauce tasted awesome!!! Who would have thought??? Not me... I still like cooking it the slow way, but just did not have the time tonight. My pressure cooker has gotten me out of a lot of jams, when I am running against the clock. This is one of my favorite cooking devices/tools of all time.

I've never had a pressure cooker. They were always a bit dicey when I was growing up with tales of them exploding from time to time so I never really wanted one. I'm sure they are perfectly safe nowadays.

Judy, the one of my brother had exploded. They had received the pressure cooker as a gift for their marriage. It exploded the first time they used it, damaging their brand new kitchen. They were lucky that they were not around.

@teresatrotter I'm sure they've improved the design since I was a kid.

I have used one since the early 80's and never once had a problem with them. They last a long time too. It could be that the lid was placed on there incorrectly. If it is not, it can come loose, and thus the reason for the explosion. I always make sure it is on there real tight.

As a person who does very little cooking except maybe in my crockpot, I honestly have no idea what a pressure cooker is and how it works! So, you're telling me you pressurize the food and that somehow makes it cook? Enlighten me Teresa on this contraption!

Okay... Here is your first cooking lesson Jeff. LOL - There is a pot with a lid, that you clamp onto it. There is a gadget with a little spindle on top that lets the steam out why it pressurizes the food. You need to add liquid, because it lets out a lot of steam, and you don't want your food to dry out and burn. It comes with an instruction booklet. This pressure literally cuts your cooking time by 75% percent sometimes. Your meat comes out very tender, and juicy. If you add potatoes, cabbage, carrots, or any hard vegetable...it will cook it in under 10 minutes. Just a warning: When you release the steam by tilting the spindle, you need to do it away from you. That steam is hot, and can burn you. It is an incredible investment. The pots are sold for as little as $20 at Walmart and goes up. Or you can buy the electric gadgets now. I just go for the old fashion way of cooking. You need to try it. You may learn to love to cook. And you will make your wife a happy camper too.

@teresatrotter It definitely sounds like something I should invest in! I'll have to check it out next time I'm at Wal-Mart. Anything that cuts my cooking time down by 75% is a must-have in my kitchen! lol

@teresatrotter Of course it can happen with anything. I know that most Americans would never use our Italian Moka coffee maker for the same reason. Of course it can explode and sometimes it surely happened. I am at home and I usually have all the time to cook in the old way, taking all the time needed. Anyway, as I have to cook big chestnuts and this takes a lot of time, I could see if I can use my pressure cooker. I will not stay close to the cooker, so that if there is an accident nobody will be hurt.

I am not trying to sound mean or anything. But you are missing out. I guarantee you, your brother was one of the few, and I mean very few unlucky ones. If you let fear keep you from using something, then you will miss out on a lot of good products out there. It is still your choice. But one bad experience does not negate the entire product line. As I mentioned above, this thing has been sold for decades, and even though I said thousands, I would change it to say millions of these cookers have been sold. If it was that harmful, I guarantee you that it would have been taken off the market a long time ago. A lot of the reason pressure cookers explode is because the lid is not put on and locked correctly. I sometimes do it a few times, to make sure it is on there tight. Yet...it could have been a malfunction. But almost every product that exists today has malfunctioned at one time or another. But that does not mean people stop buying the product.
