I like to play table tennis (ping-pong) – not in a serious way but just for a bit of fun – and I always fancied having a table. Of course our living room wasn’t big enough, but I had the idea of making a large hatch between our two rooms, each with a cover attached to the wall at the bottom of the hatch opening and hinged at the bottom (I should have drawn a picture shouldn’t I? Bear with me and I’ll try to describe what I imagined). When not in use, the covers on either side would be folded up against the wall. The undersides would then be visible and could be decorated to match the wall or even painted as a mural. The upper side of each cover would be painted as half a table tennis table so when both covers were folded down into the horizontal position there would be half a table in each room with a large hatch between and a game could be played with one player in each room. We never actually put this into practice since it would require major structural work to the house, but I liked the idea and had it at the back of my mind for years in case we did actually do any major work. Now I find that someone has taken essentially the same idea and adapted it to a door – great idea but I feel that they’ve stolen my thunder!

This is very much thinking outside the square. What a great idea.

I love your idea, it sounds awesome. I love to play ping-pong, my husband too, I wonder why we do not have a table in the garden.

@Fleura Oh yes, there is a perfect place just in front of the porch. We could move the table under the porch during the bad season.

@LadyDuck That sounds perfect, so useful to have an area under cover.

That's a good idea, do you have enough space?

Mumsy still has our table tennis table in the garage. Every so often it pops out to visit the back garden!

It's fun isn't it, but the tables are just so big!

It's a cool idea! We had a ping pong table when I was a kid, but it basically gathered dust in the basement; I never learned to play. Shame, really--it looks fun!

Don't you just hate when that happens? You have an idea and someone else has the same idea. I mean great minds think alike, but at the same time you're like, "That was my idea and they stole it!"

I know! Just goes to show, I should have done something with my idea first!

What a great idea. I used to play table tennis when I was younger. Our house isn't big enough to have a table tennis table in it either. Must show my wife that Ping Pong door!!

Don't you hate it when someone else steals ideas right out of your head and gets them done before you can? I bought a portable ping pong set for The Boy one year. It has a net that is held to the table with spring clamps and two paddles. If you have a long-ish dining table, it works fine. It's just for fun, so why not?

We have one of those too, but there isn't really enough room around the table to play properly!

When we went to Manila for our daughter's graduation , we stayed at a family friend . At his house he has the above constructed on his garden near the receiving room . He said it's a god exercise for him , because he can play even if he has no real opponent .

It seems you should have pattened your idea but since someone has already invented it, it seems like you should just buy one and enjoy it!!

We used to have a ping pong table our basement when I was growing up. I tried something in an apartment once and got rid of it.
