Does anyone keep open house any more?

Does anyone keep open house any more? This where guests and even strangers can guarantee hospitality from you 24/7, helping themselves to any of your food and drink, watch your TV, sleep over etc. Nowadays it’s a good way to be exploited and robbed blind, as guests, gate-crashers and rent free free-loaders become one and the same thing. While happy to invite friends round for visits, there are limits on the time they can spend, which rooms they can access, which beers are out for them, etc. When it gets to time for them to depart, they are likely to be told to go. Similarly, in visiting others, I never exploit their hospitality or overstay my welcome. Have you ever kept open house? Arthur Chappell

We are always happy to welcome others and to give them a bed and a meal. I guess we haven't had anyone exploit our generosity. I'm not sure how we'd get rid of an unwelcome guest.

@arthurchappell It is. I get really annoyed that such people should put the hosts in such a position.

This was not uncommon when I was younger. Of course you are right that nowadays it is no longer viable.

Any of my friends are free to pop by any time, hopefully none will ever have the need to stay over, but if they did they would be welcome - not that our small house has much room for such unexpected things. But I like to think that during the day anyone is welcome.

there may be dangers involved in todays world, but even though my home is not open for strangers 24/7 its pretty much open for anyone that requires a sleep over, friends, friends of friends etc
