A lot can happen in a short time

Two weeks ago I received notice that my driver's license is due to be renewed in December of this year. I'd been thinking about getting my glasses prescription updated so I headed to the nearest optometrist's office for a quick exam and new glasses.
The exam showed I have cataracts! Of course the optometrist refused to issue new eyeglasses until the matter has been addressed. So I scheduled an appointment with the ophthalmologist, who confirmed the diagnosis. He told me to go ahead and apply for license renewal, which includes a vision test at the Dept of Motor Vehicles (DMV). And he assured me that if I didn't pass the vision test, he'd send them the results from my vision test at his office which shows my acuity meets the requirements for the driver's license.
Meanwhile, I have a second appointment with him this Friday. Cataract surgery will take place sooner or later, date still to be decided.
I'm approaching this as an old-age adventure!

I went to get my license renewed today and I passed the vision test, YAY! The doc has me on glaucoma drops, one drop a day in one eye only. Besides the usual aches and pains, this is my first old age infirmity, but thank goodness, these days not a serious situation.

@blitzfrick I had glaucoma laser surgery three years ago, it's not a disease tied up to the age. I have eyes bigger than average and I have narrow angled glaucoma, that is common in people with big eyes.

How long did the journey take for you? I love that this surgery is so commonplace now. It is great encouragement.

I went to an ophthalmologist 6 years ago, suspecting I had cataracts but he gave me the all-clear. So aggravating. I was 66 at the time, could've begun then to prepare for this day. Bah.

It is kinda scary, but reports from those who've had it, and are living with the "pretend" lenses are encouraging.
