A Perfect Timing

The photo is mine, the pond today.

When I put the net over the pond ten days ago, everybody said it was too early. I know that usually the leaves do not fall until the beginning of November, but I was uncomfortable. This autumn is unusual, it rained a lot, it's warm during the day and cold during the night. Well, a look outsides confirmed that I was not wrong after all. The leaves net is loaded with leaves and if it was not there, now it would be a problem to get out the leaves from the water. Now I need a perfect timing to remove the net, before the first snow. Are the leaves falling where you live, or is it too early?

Yesterday evening we had a storm and many leaves have fallen on the ground. I do not know if this year we are going to have a lot of snow, but it's better to be prepared.

@enlightenedpsych2 Yes we will get an inch or two every now and then but back in 1993 we got a blizzard and Alabama closed down for a week.

@LadyDuck It is not suppose to be a small snow not a big one so that is good.

@BelleStarr That is good, a big snow in October can cause serious problems.

Snow already? It's a problem when the snow comes and the leaves are still on the tress, let's hope that it's not a big snow fall.

@LadyDuck Maybe you should shake the trees to get rid of the remaining leaves.

@Asylum My little maple seems to want to keep its leaves, I cannot shake the big beech (not seen in the photo) because it's not on my property, but the leaves fall on my pond.

We have tons of leaves everywhere because there are about 100 different trees on the property where our apartment is.

@simone10 It is surely a pain, every time you start to rake the leaves the winds starts to blow.

@LadyDuck Neither do I. They have someone who works the grounds and they use a blower but even then, that has to be a pain.

Some leave begin falling during the summer months, but that's only for a few trees. Once we begin getting lots of rain in or towards the fall it causes the leaves to turn faster and fall off the trees. jSo, yes they've been falling for some time now. I took some pictures last week of trees in the area that turned red. Ours were still green in our yard, but after that bit of snow a week ago most are changing color and falling off at the same time. This image is of trees I see when going to work, about three blocks from my house. I didn't realize that you cover your pond to catch the falling leaves. Does your husband help with that, or is it solely up to you? That must be difficult to get it covered correctly and then be able to gather it up without losing any of the leaves as you do so.

Your picture is beautiful I love the colors of the trees This year I did all the work myself. I have emptied the pond and cleaned it, then I have placed the net, standing inside the pond, because that was the easiest way to go. After I have finished I have filled the pond with water. I have checked yesterday, the water is clean and there are no leaves inside

@MarshaMusselman Exactly, in one week I am going to close the water outside to prevent the freezing of the pipes and it's not good to leave the pond empty.

@LadyDuck Since you empty the pond anyway, couldn't you leave it empty until the leaves are down and then fill it again? That way if some leaves sneak in it would be easier to clean without the water. But, maybe once the leaves are finished falling it's too cold to be running water into the pond for winter.

Where I live all the leaves are almost gone now. They started falling a few weeks ago after we had a heavy rain and wind storm blowing through.

@cacay1 Rain is also useful for the agriculture, it's a shame when it rains too much.

It sounds like you had good timing. Yes, some leaves have fallen, but we still have plenty of greenery. We need a frost or freeze I think for the leaves to change. Some of the leaves have just runed brown and dropped off, but most are still on the trees here.

@BellaDoc Well, the French took the word directly from the Latin (just like Italians) autumnus .

@vandana7 "Fall" is an English word. "Autumn" is French. The French influenced the English words, after the English had invaded north America and taken the then current language with them.

@LadyDuck Now you know , it's better to put the net in anticipation for that , just in case it comes early . And it did .

@cacay1 That's because @LadyDuck knows it already from previous experience and she knows it would be better to anticipate the worst early .

Some trees are shredding the leaves (still green), but others are still loaded and the leaves are now changing colours. I plan to go around and take photos.

It sounds like you timed that just perfectly! We cannot put a net like that over our pond, the weight of the snow that we get would have the net in the pond. It gets cold enough here that eventually it will freeze over, we leave a bubbler on so that there is always a spot that doesn't freeze over.

In fact as soon as the leaves have finished to fall, I have to remove the net because of the snow. I hope to be ready to do this in about 10 days.

Clever you to have the net in place in good time. I've been raking up leaves for a few weeks now, and there are plenty more to come. At least I don't have a pond to worry about. I love your photo.

Thank you Janet. My husband wanted the pond, but of course, after the initial excitement, he does not take care of the pond. I hope to be able to remove the net before the first snow. Tomorrow I blow the leaves away.

here in Latvia the leaves are falling slowly. Some trees are just beginning to change color and all our grass and bushes are still green. In northern Europe this is unusual and all of a sudden you can get a quick snow fall so I am wondering how this weekend will be.
