Ingles por favor (English please)

I was raised knowing German and Czech because that was family background and in high school, I took Spanish because I thought it was interesting. I know that the USA is the 'melting pot' of the world BUT that doesn't mean that if you come to this country, you should't know ENGLISH; especially if you move here.
If I were to move to Italy, Spain, France, Germany; or any other country, it would be rude and disrespectful not to speak the language of that country. So why is it perfectly fine for the Mexicans (not Spaniards), who have been here a long time, not speak English.
There was a situation in the news and a lady was being interviewed and said she had been here 40 years and had never seen anything like what happened in her neighborhood. You mean to tell me you've been here 40 years and all you still speak is Spanish and the reporter had to speak Spanish in order to interview you? I see it all the time.
My neighbor are the Garcia's and he speaks English, but she doesn't. Why?? It's a dang good thing I speak Spanish because there have been several times I've had to interact with her.
By golly, if you come to this country; the "melting pot", "coffee pot", "pitty pot" of the world, then by golly Ingles por favor!!!!!!! Sorry about the rant.

You mean you're still not used to it?
The women you're referring to are spoiled by their families, they have their kids to help them translate so they never have to learn English and heaven forbid you make a reference to them as then they tell all the other neighbors that you are a racist.

I think it's hard sometimes for people, especially those who come as adults, to learn English if they live in a Spanish speaking community. What's the incentive?
My mother is an immigrant, so I've heard how hard English is to learn. If I had my druthers, no kid would graduate without know English and one other language, be that Spanish, Mandarin or whatever.

Back in the day when the immigrants came by the boat load to Staten Island @msiduri , before they could get their US Citizenship, they had to learn English. By golly if they could do it, so should the Mexicans. Especially in our computer age, there are many classes on line that they could take. They just don't want to.

De nada. I don't intend to entertain you with my broken English whenever I set feet there. Pass the coffee pot please.

And in today's computer age, there is no excuse except for the fact that they don't want to @marlina .

I fully agree with you. When I moved from Italy to France, I spoke French there and when I visit the United States of course I speak English. If people love so much their country that they do not want to speak another language, they should to back there.

@nanette64 This is also what I think. If I visit a country it is possible that I do not know the language, but if I decide to go to live in another country, the first thing is to learn the language and the habits. This is a form of respect.

@LadyDuck It's sad that more people don't think like that.

They should learn our language, and they should also strive to assimilate to our culture, not makes us change our laws to accommodate theirs. And as far as language goes, most of the them do know how to speak English, they just play dumb about it. "No habla ingles" Start taking away their free handouts and they'll be singing to you in English in no time! lol

i agree that if'n one moves to 'nother country, they need to learn the language, customs 'n all else such entails. that bein' said, i know lots 'f folks who don't speak english who've been here fer many years. most're embarrassed they might use the wrong words 'n be ridiculed. they'll speak their broken english with me 'n folks they know well, but not with others.
if'n ya think positively 'bout such, does create jobs fer those that're bi-lingual :)
