The towels I described washing in baking soda, lemon juice and Apple Cider Vinegar are a bit whiter, but not snowy white. I think I will try again later and as they are not softer, use White Vinegar. At least I know they are clean.

You have to wash them first using white vinegar. Than sprinkle with baking soda and Epsom salts, wait half and hour than wash with your usual detergent and dry.

I think I will try that. I have to go into town for the salts though

@Jackalyn Do you have a dryer? You could feel the difference between a towel dried on a line and a towel dried in the machine. The second is so much softer.

@LadyDuck No, I don't. There really is no room here or I would dry them with a tennis ball in the dryer.

My towels never seem to be really soft. I wish I knew what to do about it.

It also depends which soap your using and the fabric of the towel

I usually use whitener plus softener which I can buy in stores. But after reading your post, I think I want to make experiment using baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar.. Can you use only the white vinegar' without baking soda and lemon juice?

My towels always come out of the wash really rough and unpleasant. I need to find something that restores them to their soft, fluffy state.
