Heading towards Uluru, Northern Territory, Australia

On our recent three-week trip to the centre of Australia, we travelled without too many interruptions to Erldunda which, depending on how the measurement is done, is just about as close to the centre of Australia as it is possible to get. From Erldunda, the road goes north to Alice Springs or west to Uluru. We stayed at the caravan park there then headed east to Uluru. Erldunda has a variety of accommodation options, a swimming pool, restaurant, café, fuel and a modest range of supplies. We stayed in the caravan park where the water bowls put down for the birds were very popular. I've included photos of pink and grey galahs, a black-and-white mudlark and the crested spinifex pigeons which are very similar to the crested pigeons we have in the West. The males also spread their tails like peacocks when attempting to entice a female. There are two large enclosures, one of which contains a number of red kangaroos and the other a number of emus including a baby chick. Can you see a patch of blue under the bushes in one of the photos? That is the head of an emu sitting on a clutch of eggs. The male does the hatching and subsequent raising of the chicks. From Erldunda, you can head north 200kms to Alice Springs or west 267kms to Uluru. We headed west to Ulurua and, like many before us, we thought we'd spotted Uluru only to find out it was Mt Conner, another huge monolith which is visible about 100 kilometres before reaching Uluru. Mt Conner reaches 300 metres above ground level. Despite being regarded as the 'dead centre', there had been good rains and there was a lot of vegetation and wildflowers along the sides of the roads. We were aware that we were seeing the country at its best.

What a wonderful slideshow Judy. I loved all the animals, but the cutest is the baby ostrich, they are so cute.

@LadyDuck It is an emu, not that it matters. They would both have the same challenges while they were small.

He has beautiful stripes, hasn't he? There is usually a lot more than one but maybe conditions there are quite natural enough for optimal hatching.

Love the bird in this photo! I really miss my bird watching. I don't see many from up here. Occasionally a flock will fly by, but they go so fast that if I'm not sitting right at the window at the time, i completely miss them!

We managed to get a few good bird shots and even more not-so-good bird shots! I have several of birds without their heads.

Pink and grey galahs can become good talkers if they are caught early enough. But they look lovely in the wild too.

There will be plenty more, don't worry. We're only into about day 5 but I'm trying to space them out so people don't get bored with landscapey photos. :)

@JudyEv immensely so! the tanagers, hummers, red/gold house finch, robins 'n occasional blue jays 'bout sums'p our colorful birds. did've a flock 'f peach faced parrots get lost here durin' a blizzard once. i fear i t'was too busy haulin' water to cattle/horses to've the time to snap a pic 'f 'em. they completely covered my apple tree, stayin' fer the day takin' respite'n my lil sanctuary where they'd food, water 'n some shelter. by the time i'd gotten all the critters tended (the snow t'was waist deep, hauled water from the house'n 5 gallon buckets..), they'd gone

Many of our birds are pretty 'ordinary' but I guess we take more photos of the prettier ones. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos.

It was called Ayers Rock for years. Luckily Uluru is easy to spell and pronounce. Some of the aboriginal words are shockers.

@Ronrybs It is a bit confusing as the Olgas are now Kata Tjuta so until you get used to the new pronounciation you have no idea what people are talking about.

I suppose it was really. We had thought about going to Bhutan but I thought I really wanted to see more of Australia first. We're not getting any younger so need to make wise choices!!

That is one cute kangaroo over there, why would you have interruptions? I mean there's not much traffic over there I think.

Around the towns and cities there is plenty of traffic. I meant that we didn't make too many stops on our way to Uluru. Coming back we stopped more often and saw more bits and pieces.

There was a lot to see. Some of the flowers were pretty to see but hard to photograph. At least they didn't look like much in a photo.

What is the land like in Central Australia? I think of it as outback. From what I could see, it looks a bit like much of California. Is there a lot of clay in the soil?

I haven't been to California but from pictures I've seen it is similar. Lots of mesas in places and yes, lots of clay. The iron deposits in the soil give it the red colour. Much of what we drove through was pretty sparse and bare but in other places there was much more vegetation than we had thought there would be. We saw it at its best too. In the 'wet', you'd be battling to get around in a standard car. There are floodway signs every several hundred metres along most of the roads.

It is a very special and spiritual place to our indigenous people. It must have blown away the first explorers when they came across it.

Fabulous slide show! I'm sure I got the right one this time. I loved the lone flowers sitting in that dry, red earth and the tabletop hill, too.

I cheated. It is cropped from another photo. The photos seem to save in a big format in our cameras so often I can crop a photo to improve it.
