Hello everyone. I'm back if only temporarily. I really am trying to keep up with the time I am allotted. As I have written lately, I have been all over creation taking my mother for tests and doctors appointments. The last time we went to the Gastroentrologist we had a surprise diagnosis. They came into the room with a file in their hands and promptly gave a diagnosis of hepatitis C. What a shock. As she started to talk about treatment she noticed that she had the right files but the wrong test results. The results belonged to a different patient. I am thankful that she noticed before we left and my mother started treatment for something she didn't have. It turns out that there is someone in the staff that is not too careful when they file. We still don't know what is wrong but we do now it not Hep C. Have you ever been diagnosed? Would you be a little leery of going back to that doctor? What is you opinion about what happened?

I cannot understand how something like this can happen. Imagine if she started a treatment that could have even been dangerous for her.

That was what was running through my mind. I cannot imagine why they don't check and recheck when filing medical information.

Mistakes happen. I'm glad the person realized it before things went too far.

It's true we are human and we all make mistakes but it was frightening.

@HazySue I'm sure it was. The nurse called me today with my blood test results and this post went through my mind, but it was all good. I'm just waiting on one more result, which I expect to be negative as well.

@just4him what a relief. You are blessed with the results. That's a test you don't mind failing.

There are sometimes when files get misplaced. It is not always the doctor´s fault but a secretary. About 3 years ago, after a stay in the hospital, they gave me my file. On looking at it at home, I discovered it was not my file (only the cover) and it even included the other patient´s ID. Fortunatly my friend Dixie worked near the other patient´s home and they exchanged files.

@HazySue It is even more scary that you can be treated for another ailment. After all the ID is just a piece of paper.

@marguicha true, it was scary that my mother could have been given medicine for something she did not have.

I know it was the staff who misfiled it. I am glad the doctor looked at the name on the test results. Wow, it is scary to think that someone else could be handed your ID.

We are all human so I can understand how accidents can happen but this could have been really serious if it hadn't been caught.

Thank God it was caught before they gave her something she didn't need! I don't trust many doctors anymore, just the couple good ones I have found that truly do care about their patients.

It is becoming harder to trust doctors these days I am thinking that may be why the insurance they have to pay for has gotten so high.

Good thing that it was caught in time. Yes, it did happen to me that the clinic had my husband's results in my file. We were pretty upset. Also, did get a misdiagnosis that costs me dearly.

That is very poor really. It could have had drastic consequences for several patients.

Good thing they noticed finally. Usually they verify so many times that they have the right information in front of them.

Thankful that the doctor realized that wasn't the right test results for you Mom. I know that mistakes like that unfortunately happen. We expect no mistakes from our doctor's, and rightly so, but they are just like us, human. It would be great if there could be a person whose only job would be to check everything before the doctor goes to talk with the patient. Both doctor and nurses work so very hard, it would be good to have another who could make sure the paper work and test results were correct. Prayers that they find out what is going on with your Mom. Have a blessed day

I agree. I think they do need someone checking the files when they take them out before they hand them to the doctor. We all do make mistakes.
