Bob the Railway Dog

While on our holiday in South Australia and the Northern Territory recently we came across this sculpture in Petersburg. This little dog, Bob, became the railway mascot renowned throughout a wide area for his love of travelling on trains in particular with occasional sorties on trams and even Murray paddle-steamers. As a youngster he was rounded up in Adelaide in 1883 with many other strays and transported north, the idea being that the dogs would be released in areas where rabbits had reached plague proportions. Whose preposterous idea this was I have no idea. Bob was adopted by a railway guard from Terowie, William Terry. They moved to Petersburg a few months late and Bob began travelling on trains first with William but later on his own as the mood took him. He made both long and short trips, travelling as far afield as Sydney, Melbourne, Oodnadatta, Broken Hill, Mt Gambier and more. Bob died in 1895 and was mourned by the travelling public. The statue was created by South Australian sculptor Silvio Apponyi. Many years later, the kelpie Red Dog, achieved much the same status in Western Australia although he preferred travelling by motor vehicle.

What a lovely story! And I do love that they created a statue to Bob's memory.

@CRK109 I've just posted about another one that wormed his way into the hearts of many too. And I'm now reading a book about the different animals that worked with humans during war time.

@JudyEv I'm sure he was. Some dogs have huge personalities that really change the lives of the humans around them. Bob was obviously one of those!

The statue reminds me of that of Hachiko's. This remarkable dog's story was even featured in a movie with Richard Gere.

Is that the dog that sat on the railway station waiting for his master? It's a lovely story. I haven't seen the film.

Dogs can creep into ones heart with just about anything they do - you wonder what their passion is - its wonderful that someone took him in and made him a train traveling dog

I've seen so many statues of dogs around the world who meant so much to the loving public. They are a man's best friend.

I read somewhere what mix of breeds they thought he was but I've forgotten now. You don't see too many that look like him.

Lovely statute and a nice story behind it. At Huddersfield we have Felix, a resident station cat and senior pest controller. She even has her own Facebook page. I wonder if there'll be a statue of her one day.
