If you have read my posts in the past you probably know that I have only about a dozen teeth left in my head. I tried to seek help and get dentures but found them to be way to expensive for me. So, the below bit of historical trivia really hit home with me:
I was reading my daily trivia, that I get each day, and today it was about George Washington. Poor guy. He had issue with oral hygiene since early adulthood. By the time of his inauguration as president he had one of his own teeth left. He had had several sets of agonizing dentures made with metal fasteners, human teeth and rare hippopotamus ivory. The ones he had for his inauguration were special ones made from brass, ivory and gold that had built by John Greenwood. The sole remaining tooth was given to him as a keepsake when the president lost it. Greenwood kept it as a memento and had it in a glass display he had hung on his watch chain.

it sounds much more dignified when treated thusly, I know of others who are in the same boat, sad that what was needed wasn't there growing up to prevent problems now, at least this sort of thing is more rare, with fluorides in the water and such

I wish I had been taught early to take care of my teeth.

@Jessicalynnt ......Always helps. I'm not looking forward to when the teeth I have left to chew with are gone. Then what do I do?

That would be nice. Don't know what it would be though.

@celticeagle If dentists really cared about people, they would make the prices more affordable. The insurance companies do not consider the mouth as part of the body.

@akalinus ......I could get insurance and all that but why pay for the insurance? I could use that money to pay off my bill. Irritates me when I think about it.

I have always heard about the wooden ones. I am paying on a huge bill that did not fix the problem on one tooth. My family all had bad teeth and I have no clue how they afforded dentures, they certainly never had the money to take me to the dentist. Mom got dentures at 42, I am pretty certain dad was in his thirties and I believe my older sister was as well.

Me too! I wasn't aware of the metal. My mom lucked out. She was married to an electrical engineer who worked for Idaho Power. She had her dentures made and it was all paid for. Mom's were probably done about the same age as yours.

So do I. It was going to cost me $9000 to get mine done. Can't afford that or have the credit for a loan.

That's why I shared it. Thought maybe others didn't know it as well as myself.
