When I sat down to have lunch I opened my iPad and saw the first thing on my news feed was Leon Russell's death, replaced quickly by the story of a 7.9 earthquake in New Zealand. It appears that the epicenter was near Kaikoura, and a tsunami warning has been issued. I hope all of our myLotters in the afffectted area are safe, and please check in with a discussion soon so we know you're okay! Here's video of the earthquake from YouTube. Frightening!!!

Life will be severely disrupted for quite some time down south, but I think most people are safe. It was quite some shake, even up here!

Hi from New Zealand. I live in the North Island, but still felt the strongest earthquake I've ever felt, and we're hundreds of kms from the epicentre.

7.9? That does sound frightening. I hope the epicenter wasn't near a highly populated area.

Fortunately no, but there were several small rural towns affected

@valmnz has written a post and also commented on some. She is in the North Island and although they felt the quake quite strongly they are safe. @BobbyDem (and Morpheus the Cat) are also from NZ but she hasn't been active here since June. It was certainly a major quake.

@valmnz That's good. I always enjoyed her posts - as I did yours. Have you seen the NZ film 'Hunt for the Wilder People' yet? We thoroughly enjoyed it - so much so that we saw it again with a second group of friends.

@TheHorse -- I was listening to New Zealand radio on my TuneIn app, and they said two deaths. That was early, though (8 AM their time, they're 18 hours ahead of eastern time US).

@FourWalls Sorry to hear that. But maybe that's good for a 7.6.

@TheHorse -- from the pictures of damage I've seen, just two deaths would be a miracle!!

Dang, hope everyone is alright. 7.9 is huge. Biggest I ever felt was 7.3 and epicenter was like 70 miles away. Scary as hell even no damage was reported here. So I can imagine what that must have been like.
