So, Here's The Plan

We need another reliable vehicle, while we get the truck fixed. The place we had it towed to wants almost four thousand dollars to repair the truck. People today told me they were the priciest people. And they were not certain that the parts they were going to get were the ones we needed.
Hubby is having it hauled to someone who is much less expensive for labor, and he has another connection looking for used parts since we have had no luck. Our banker said even at $4000 it is worth fixing as it is worth $13,000. So that is in the plans, meanwhile, the little sports car hubby drives does not have a good heater.
Tomorrow we are going to look at a different vehicle, used, for $1000. Banker says it is worth a lot more than that. It is a cargo van and would be ideal for his job, or for hauling car show stuff or even to travel with and sleep in. The heater works. Hubby would be glad.
Then we would be able to take our time on the truck repairs. If you have time, you can save money.

I hope it all works out for you. We still haven't taken our cars in, but being retired and winter coming it's not that horribly important

I do not think hubby will ever willingly retire. I am torn between a job I enjoy and the thought of staying in and snuggling when it is cold. I got along quite well for a while here with no vehicle.

@JudyEv I seem to have some of the worst luck. I blew a timing belt on an interstate once, in the middle of summer. Yes, that is expensive to fix and the car was never the same afterwards.

I hope it works out. I'm iffy about buying such cheap cars as you worry about what is wrong with it for that price. That's why instead of getting my son a cheapo car we just got ourselves a new one and gave him the car hubby's been driving for the past year. We're still making payments on it, and our son has to pay us for those payments, but we know he has a reliable vehicle and that's the important thing.

We are still making payments on our truck, and it is the one that really messed up. Hubby is a mechanic and makes sure things are well taken care of. That is why we can have cheap cars.

@GardenGerty That's always a big pain, to pay on a car you can't even drive!

I hope all goes well . The repair sounds quite expensive.

Horribly so, but I also find myself wondering if this repair place is falsifying some of the damage.

We have had our share of car troubles in the past. Right now everything is problem free. We have a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan and a 2006 Ford Ranger.

You sound like you are in good shape. We have an ugly car that is running well, the 1998 Monte Carlo, it has lots of cosmetic issues, but is sound. Our truck is a 2006 Chevy Silverado. Hubby is driving our Mercury Capri right now, and has another 91 Mercury Capri that he has been working on. His Capri that is in running shape has no heater.

I am sure we will. We have had this man do work for us before. The mechanic shop that has the truck now will charge $85 per hour labor. The independent repair guy charges $20 per hour.

I think this bank will give us the best rates as it is a community bank and we have done business with them for over forty years.
