Stunning News But I'm Behind Him All The Way

As many of you know my youngest son is in his 3rd year of grad school at Michigan State University. He has one project to present to his professors and he will have earned his Master's Degree in Astro Physics. While he was at Purdue University getting his Bachelor's Degree in Physics he was a happy guy. Then just over two years ago he went to MSU to earn his PhD. The work at Purdue was a piece of cake compared to his graduate studies at MSU. I started to notice that whenever I talked to my son since going to MSU he always sounded mad or irritated. I thought for the next two years he was irritated with me. How wrong I was. Recently he told me and his dad how unhappy he is. I was shocked and saddened that he took this long to tell us his feelings. He said he is sick of the garbage he is experiencing at MSU. While it's a fantastic university, the " I'm better than you because you are a 2nd year grad student and I'm a 4th year grad student " has become way more than he can bear. He has decided to take a year off. Heck he may never go back. But now that the decision is made he sounds once again like the happy kid I have always had. And I couldn't be happier. His mental health is so much more important to me than his education. And soon he will have that Masters Degree, in about a month he tells me. So he will get his Masters Degree and he is doing a research project for his professor that he wants to finish and then he is quitting. I and his dad don't have a problem with this. He is a grown man and can make his own decisions. He still has a bright future and can do almost anything he wants with that Masters Degree. He is coming home today for Thanksgiving and I can't wait to hold my boy in my arms. I can't wait to see his smile again and look into his beautiful blue eyes. I don't know what the future holds for my son, but I have every confidence that it's a bright future. This is a picture of both my sons. Sam is on the right he is my oldest age 25. And Danny is my youngest age 24, on the left is the one at MSU. This was taken in August of this year.

Yup my older boy loves his beard. He is such a hairy guy like my dad. He can grow that full beard in a week lol. My younger son not so much. He can't grow a full beard to save his life lol.

Your sons mental health certainly should be a priority and I give him a lot of credit for realizing that he needs to step away from his education for now and reclaim his happiness. I'm sure you'll be a happy mom being to hug him when he comes home for Thanksgiving. Both your sons are handsome devils

You can have the best education in the world, but if you are miserable things may not work out for you. I'm also glad he finally talked to me and his dad, he knew we would be behind him in whatever decision he made, it was quitting school that scared him. I am and forever will be proud of him for the person he is and all his amazing accomplishments. Thanks for all your kind words, I think they are handsome too. And more importantly they grew into the good men I had always hoped for.

Sorry to hear he has been unhappy this whole time. At least once he does the project he is going to do for his professor and he quits hopefully he will be more happy.

@fishtiger58 That is good that he is happier now that he made his decision. Parents always know when something is wrong with their children.

He is actually much happier just with the decision to give it a rest. I am pleased as I knew there was something wrong and he wouldn't tell me.

People can be so mean. I'm sorry he's had a tough time at MSU and probably made the best decision. Handsome looking men you have there.

@fishtiger58 And you have the right to think they are beautiful, but don't tell them that, tell them they are handsome young men.

You did what any good parent would do. You stand behind him and you support him in the decisions that he makes. His mental health is far more important. He is blessed you have such wonderful parents. You have done a great job raiding them. Happy Thanksgiving.

I am too. He got home last night and told me he is still stressing about school and not sleeping well. I don't like to hear that. He says once he is all the way done he knows things will improve in the stress department. Should be mid January when he is finally done with it all. But I can see he is happy about his decision.

I am sure that he took the right decision. I know that I was not happy in the school where I graduated and I was more than happy when it was over. Life is too short to throw away our best young years. I am sure that from now on he is again a happy guy. I like this photo of your sons.

You gotta do what you gotta do. My 19 year old dropped out of college after about a month or so. He never did well in school, and I knew college just wasn't for him. He'll find his own niche in the world. Right now he's working, living with some roommates, paying his bills and his car payment... and has thus far proven to be a very responsible 19 year old. Can't ask for much more than that!
