My first day on the new temporary job went very well though it was very tiring. To get there on time I had to get up at 4.30 AM, to catch a bus an hour later. I managed that easily and arrived at the postal sorting station twenty minutes early. There were about fifty new starters and our first few hours were just an induction talk and tour of the large facilities, going over basic health & safety rules, etc. The work itself initially involved my cutting open incoming mail sacks and tipping the contents into tubs ready for sorting by others who were given bar code scanners to use. Later as this dried up I was assigned to assembling large mobile cages and setting them out for use by other staff. It was quite physically demanding. I arrived home aching all over from far more physical exertion than usual. The staff and management are very friendly. Twenty-two more such shifts to go before Xmas, (actually we were warned that some days we may not be needed as work is not coming in as fast as expected). Arthur Chappell

4:30 AM! Not a time I'd want to be up!

@arthurchappell I'm not a very good sleeper, and getting up at that time would mean I'd be too tired to function by mid-afternoon. Possibly earlier.

This is guaranteed to be demanding after a period of unemployment.

@Asylum yes very much so though it feels good to be part of a decent work-force with a clear idea what we are doing and why

@arthurchappell It is a great pity that it is only a short term contract.

@arthurchappell I think that you will get used to it faster than that.

@Jessicalynnt not impossible but unlikely as cut-backs mean they lay off regular staff frequently let alone casual hire seasonals like myself

@Jessicalynnt yes, and at this time of year with xmas cards / presents in the post the mail quadruples so regular staff could never cope with it - the temping service is a tradition here going back many years

I was wondering if Christmas mail is gradually diminishing as the internet takes over. In our case our postage rates are much dearer than they used to be.

@JudyEv the trade in xmas cards is definately going down but I only send e-cards and greetings to friends known to me exclusively in the virtual world and e-mail

Hopefully you will get the full 22 days. Not being used to much physical labor myself I can understand how the day much have been for you.. One down I guess.

Glad to hear that things went well. You will be sore until your body adjusts to it. Sit back and relax now and let your aching body rest.
