CAR: To sell -or- not to sell? If we sell, we'd be only saving $8 a year! So I think you know the answer!

I spent 30 minutes on the phone with our auto insurance customer service asking "if" we sell a car, how much would the quote be? She told us we'd save $8 a year...
Then I played more "what-if" games.
"what if"...
- For the older car, we go with 1 way insurance instead of 2 way? You'd save $104 a year, ah that's okay.. We will keep two way insurance.
- We sell the older car and buy a new car, it'd be about $300 more
- We purchase an additional 3rd car, it'd be about $300 more
For now, we will be keeping both cars - we may consider purchasing another in year or two now. But, next month both car registrations are due, so that'll be $500 or so. December will be filled with bills bills bills..
Have you ever called a company in hopes of actually saving, but really the difference isn't by much?

I have been with the same auto insurance company for over 20 years. Every time they raise my rates, I kindly get on the phone with them and remind them that I am a very loyal customer with an almost perfect driving record. That is usually is enough to convince them to lower my rates back to what they were before.

@moffittjc That is a good idea! Except, they aren't raising the rates. Just subtracting a car, would cause the rates to increase
We will keep both cars.. for the time being it makes more sense!!

But how I think of it is..
If we sell the car, we save $8 a year..
But keeping it, we get coverage and a car to drive though we don't use it as much.
The cars fine, it doesn't need any maintenance besides the usually oil change, gas... for now :)

@infatuatedbby Does it make more sense though? By getting rid of the car, your insurance would go up slightly. By keeping the car, you now have to pay for gas, maintenance, wear-and-tear, etc. Unless you park the car and never drive it ever, you are going to be spending money on it.

Oh!!
I am not too entirely sure! I live in California.
My boyfriends car is a 2010 Honda Civic SI and his is $235? Something along that.
And the car we bought together is a 2016 Honda Accord Sport and that is $250?
I don't entirely know on the top of my head but estimating it's $500. But I am not sure how much registration / tags cost for other states or if this is just California? Or being the age of the car??
My parents have a 2005 and 2013 and their registration is higher than $30 but less than what we pay.

@HAPPSINGH Yes I think price differs depending on car year or type too!

Have you ever run quotes for other companies? It's entirely possible that you could save quite a bit if you switch to another company. From what I've heard, they generally make the most money off their most loyal customers, so they're not necessarily getting the best rates.

Yes, we've quoted other places and it was much more. Originally, the insurance was cheaper but since we added a new car - it sky rocked by $700 & that car isn't even a primary car to use. AND, we told them we're only driving it 3,000 miles a year to save $. -_-

I was in the smr boat. I had a 1979 Chevy and the Chevy insurance was less than the insurance on the Mercury.

Yeah it could be based on the year of the car too =)

$8 a year savings?. Here the older the car the cheaper insurance. I alwaysbuy a car 2010 or older to get a reasonable insurance/.

When I first registered my new car,the monthly insurance cost was 90€. Then I went to another insurance company and asked for a lower price and they gave me 80€. Then I came back to my insurance and told them that I would like to change because I was given a better price elsewhere. But they didn't want to lose a costumer so they gave me a new offer of 70€ instead. So by that process I saved me 20€ a month, which equals 240€ a year.

That is very good to hear =)
Maybe we'll try again! We've tried calling other places but they quoted a lot more because we didn't want to change the coverage and options we selected.
