Thanksgiving Dinner

Today my brother and I took our mother out for Thanksgiving dinner. We went to a restaurant we have gone to quite often. I had made reservations. We got to the restaurant about fifteen minutes early. The place was packed. We had to wait about ten minutes pass our reservation time. They seated us and a waitress asked what we wanted to drink. We told her.
After about ten minutes we were asked if anyone had taken our order. We told them we put in an order for our drinks. After another ten minutes another waitress asked if anyone had taken our order. We told her someone had taken our drink order. She said, “I don’t know who did, so I’m going to take it.” A couple of minutes later another waitress asked if anyone took our order. I told her she was the third waitress who has asked.
The drinks finally arrived. We only had two options for dinner–a traditional turkey dinner or prime rib. We all wanted the turkey. The dinner arrived. It was good dinner.
Then we discovered why things happened the way they did. The waitress who took our original drink order quit and walked out. We were thanked for our patience although Mom was getting a bit impatient when our drinks did not arrive after about ten minutes. But she did not create a scene.
One thing I can say. My brother did not make me feel like we were a bunch of hillbillies. He did not pick up the green beans and eat them with his fingers. He did not say anything stupid to any of the waitresses. For whatever reason, he was on his best behavior.
Even though we spent two hours in the restaurant Mom said several times on the why back to where she is living that it was a good dinner. Mom usually doesn’t say anything at all about the dinner if she didn’t like it. So when she doesn’t say anything we know she didn’t really care for it. If we get a bad dinner she never wants to return to that restaurant even if we had had good dinners there before. No second chances with her. One bad dinner and that restaurant is out.
I hope all Americans had a good Thanksgiving Day.

I'm glad too and glad Mom did have a fairly good time and enjoyed the dinner.

Wow, I wonder what the quitting waitress' story was . . . maybe the Tday crowd just too much for her? Even though it was initially a bit chaotic, I'm glad dinner turned out good. Your brother was a good boy
- was it something in his drink maybe
? But the important thing is your mother had lovely time. Ah, so nice when the holidays run so smoothly. Happy Day After Thanksgiving!

@RichardMeister That's a law there? Then how does it work for putting references down on your resume - what's a former employer supposed to say if they are asked about a former employee who actually did the business wrong?
Who knows what pissed that waitress off - but you're right she messed it up for everyone else that had to work the tables there. One less in the staff makes a difference.

@much2say One place I worked, when I was laid off, we had a meeting with H.R. We were told that they would not give us letters of recommendation. If anyone inquired about us they would be told we worked there, the date we began, the date we left and that was it. If asked anything else H.R. would say they could not comment on it. They would not even tell anyone we were laid off and not fired.

I thought maybe Tday was too much for the waitress. But on the other hand maybe she was pissed off and decide beforehand she was going to show the boss and walkout right at the peak of business. In this state there is a law that says an employer or former employer cannot say anything bad about an employee who applies for a job elsewhere. So she doesn't have to worry about having trouble finding another job because she walked out. If she was pissed off and wanted to show the boss a thing or two she really didn't hurt the boss. The people she hurt were the other waitresses and waiters. They had to take up the slack she left. I'm certain they had planned to have our party in and out in 30 to 45 minutes instead of 2 hours. It probably really screwed up their reservations. Happy Day After Thanksgiving to you too.

How wonderful that you took your mom out. Sounds like you had a good dinner. I miss Thanksgiving a lot since I live in Latvia. That restaurant sounds like it wasn't prepared for so many people on Thanksgiving. At any time I have to wait a long time to put in an order or for food I don't mind at all if I have a drink handy. One time back in NY they told me and a friend it would take about half an hour for our food to come. We ordered a pitcher of martinis.

All we ordered was ice tea. I think the restaurant was prepared until the waitress walked out. I think it threw confusion into the mix since they probably didn't know what orders she had taken and what order she hadn't taken. That's probably why we were asked several times if our order was taken. They didn't want to double up on the order.

In spite of the way it all started out it sounds like you had a great Thanksgiving with your mom and brother.

Yes, especially since my brother didn't do anything embarrassing. Like say to the waitress, "You're not a true blonde with brown eyes, are you." Or pick up his non-finger eating food with his fingers and eat it.
