Hoarding Text Messages

Philippines
December 1, 2016 10:59am CST
I have been having problems with my old basic call-and-text cellphone. The signal has been on and off for a few weeks now, so I only receive a few text messages. I have a feeling it's because the inbox and outbox are full: 4869 messages received, 4799 messages sent since Oct 2011. It's crazy, I know. But some of those messages were exchanges during important events, while others were informative conversations. Looks like I'll be holding the phone on my left, and writing down the messages with my right if I'm serious about preserving them. Do you have super-old messages still saved in your phone's Inbox and Outbox?

We have thousands in the Inbox on the computer. It's too stupid. Most need to come off.

it's like some of them have sentimental value, which is silly. why do you seldom delete?

@hereandthere I don't send or receive texts that often. Most relate to business or family issues so I keep.them. It's more about record keeping than 'sentimental value. I do very little 'chatty' texting.

if you go to the first message you received and the first message you sent, what month and year is it?

Once they get to 500 I start deleting because my phone starts acting a little funny.

Oh goodness...that many text messages will definitely affect your phone's performance! I remember back when I had a basic call and text flip-phone, and I was always having to delete old text messages to make room for new incoming ones!

@hereandthere I always used to have a problem with sending text messages. It would give me a notice that my storage was full and I couldn't send the message until I freed up some space on my phone.

Oh my goodness, that's a lot of text messages... I think even my most active email, the number of inbox and outbox emails is still less than your numbers... I'm checking my phone now... the oldest message was from May 2014.

now you made me look at my email. inbox 4700+, outbox 2500+ but of course my email account is much older than my cellphone! so your oldest phone message is 2 years ago. but is the total number of messages in the 100s or 1000s?

@hereandthere Looks like you clean up your emails more regularly than your text messages... Hard to say on this mobile... It's a smartphone I got 2 years ago (that oldest message was like a welcome message from the manufacturer) and the way the text messages are set up is based on each conversation. But I'm pretty sure it's not in the 1000s - I don't message too much and only with a limited number of people. I also delete any messages I don't need to keep immediately and regularly.

I do not use very much my phone to send messages. I prefer very much to send emails using my computer, so I can save all those sent and received on my hard disk.
