If you hear a big sonic boom I know what it might be

We did it - we opened a savings account for each of the two kids. We are the custodians of the accounts. I made photo copies of the two deposits and wrote a note to the parents explaining what we did and that from now on we won't be sending money or buying gifts...instead money will go into their savings accounts. We mailed that yesterday morning (Friday) so I figure they will receive it Monday or Tuesday. This could go good or bad, we may never know LOL. No more telling us what we have to buy, do or say LOL! Good idea. It's sad when parents tell grandparents what they should be buying! Your gift will last longer than any store bought gift.

Thanks, yes it will. The boy has more toys than a toy store! The mom has a big family and they get a zillion toys. Being from the older generation we know how important money is and we want them to have some later in life.

@JudyEv I know exactly how you feel. His first Christmas I wanted to buy the tricycle - she said no....and then suggested we buy it for his birthday....sure, right.

I'm afraid my hackles are quick to rise if I'm told what we might like to buy. Sometimes it is meant well but it still irks me.

Good for you. This should stop a lot of fuss - but maybe not until after a lot of fuss! I wonder if and when you'll get any feedback.

Feedback - that is always an issue...seems like 'thank you' is a forgotten phrase. That angers me more than anything

@AbbyGreenhill Fair enough. I've lost count of the gifts we've to younger people and never so much as a thank you, by-your-leave or kiss-my-foot.

@JudyEv We sent his son a package recently and we waited and waited to hear if they got it. I knew it was delivered I had the UPS notice. Three days later I finally asked 'her' on Facebook pm....she said, yes. Nothing else just yes. Later said oh so and so was sick and the husband was working double shifts...so, it takes a minute to make a phone call. She said 'she would pass on the message'...and that's the last time I plan on communicating with her using FB or anything else. Let my husband deal with his son from now on.

One thing I'd suggest is considering how those accounts may impact the kids' ability to qualify for financial aid when they are ready to attend college. You probably don't want them to be unable to get aid they'd qualify for otherwise when they put in their FAFSA forms. Are you really expecting there to be a mushroom cloud when they read what you've sent them? I just read the initial discussion again, and it sounds like the mother is pretty entitled where the gift lists are concerned. I can't imagine asking for tons of expensive presents like that. Providing a list with plenty of options, sure, but not just expecting the grandparents to be the cash cow financing Christmas. Personally, I think I'd rather do what you suggested--have the grandparents send cash and let the kids pick out their presents themselves. I'm being super lazy about putting together the list this year, so I might just suggest a couple of magazine subscriptions or a month of Koala Crate and Kiwi Crate for them...

@AbbyGreenhill Just because the parents come into a lot of money down the road doesn't necessarily mean that the kids will benefit from it when they're ready to go to college. I don't fault you for deciding on the savings account--it's not something we would allow for our kids, given that I don't give their SSNs to anyone, but if their parents are okay with it that's a great option instead of sending toys. They'll probably benefit more from it down the road than they would from any toys, anyway.

@yukimori You mean you would not give your kids' ssn numbers to their grandparents?

First of all, we aren't giving them that much money. They won't need financial aid, the parents will be coming into a lot of money down the road. This is my husband's family. He is the grandfather, and we've seen the 4 year old once and aren't expecting to see them for quite a while. Since its our money and up to us how to spend or not spend it, we decided on the savings account. No one is going to tell me what gift I have to buy.

if i were a parent or an offspring, i would appreciate something with foresight like that because you don't really know what the future brings. i would like to do the same for my nieces and nephews.

Thanks. I always has a small savings account when I was a kid and I was finally allowed to use the money when I was older and it was nice!
