How generous you are ?

I was reading this quote - "Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need" It appeared to me a very meaningful quote. We should be generous towards others and expect less in return from others. What is your take on this?

That is a clever quote but I have a bit of trouble with the 'pride' bit. Pride seems to me to be a bit of a negative attribute. Maybe some word like 'humility' fits better.

@JudyEv - Yes, you could interpolate the word humility, nothing wrong in it.

this is truly a beautiful quote. But i feel, if you are very generous, people start using you. So you should be thoughtful about it too.

@shaynas - It depends upon you how generous you want to be. The limit of generosity is to be decided by yourself so that you are not taken for ride. It will differ from person to person. What about you? Are you generous or do you think twice before showing your generosity?

@dpk262006 I think i am a generous one, and that's why i feel cheated and used at times. Like many times, i give money to beggars only to find out that they were acting to be so much in pain. i am learning to be cautious now.

Yes, that is a good rule to go by. Too many are this way though.

It depends upon a person, how generous he wants to be. Too much of everything is bad.

Although this is true, I do struggle with it myself - at least with the balance of it. There are many times I feel that I have been too generous with certain friends/people. I can say and think the words that I did expect anything in return. But in my heart even something minimal as showing a bit of gratitude, even a thank you, would have been nice.

In your view, sometimes you turned out to be more generous to others, then you would have liked to. Which means that you get carried away sometimes. Is not it? Yes, I agree with you that if others cannot reciprocate at the same level, they could at least acknowledge your generosity through their gestures and sweet words. Happy New Year to you and your family :) Have a nice day! :)

@much2say It is heartening to hear that you are very considerate and you don't mind helping others and you help those who don't expect it from you. It is your magnanimity and I think helping others gives you a kind of inner happiness and satisfaction. Yes, if others cannot reciprocate, they should at least acknowledge your gestures towards them. But unfortunately some souls are thankless and they don't realize how someone helped them in their hour of need. Have a nice day.

@dpk262006 Well, I try to do more than what may be expected, depending on the situation of course. I don't think I go overboard, but I like to think I am thoughtful and will be thoughtful when people least expect it. But then I may regret it afterwards as not everyone will show appreciation for the thoughtful act. I don't expect a person to reciprocate in the same way - but at least to show a bit of appreciation - even a few short words would do. Hoping all is well with you and your family in this New Year!!!!

I abosolutely agree with that . Generous is exCtly likethat , giving more than you can . Though , sometimes when we have budgeted money , it is just but proper to give within your budget , because if you give more than that , the budget for your needs will also be compromised . So for those truly rich , give more than you can .

@SIMPLYD - Yes, ideally it should be the case, however, most of us still expect, what could be the reasons in your view?

Yes, one should not go beyond one's budget. We should donate or help others within out limits. Actually, the hidden meaning of quote is - when we help others or give something to others, we should not expect that others will do exactly the same, we should be ready to accept less.

That's a very wise saying. I believe that if we are generous to others, then this world will be also generous to us.

I'm a generous person. I always want to give to others something that is free and I don't regret it. I know someday I will reap what I sow to others. But some people have pride, they don't like to take what you give to them.

It is good to hear that you are generous and you do not mind helping others. Yes, if you help someone, the same person or someone else may come forward for your help in hour of your need. Keep it up.

I like to be kind to others. At our Jewish New Year time I like to give gifts to people and when someone buys something from me I may give them a discount.
