CHRISTMAS ON HOLD

When I left my home for foreign shores in December that year, the thought never entered my head that I won't be back in time to celebrate Christmas with family and friends. As it happened, I missed my morning Christmas Eve flight and the next available one happened to be on Boxing Day. So I spent both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in a hotel not too far from the airport. Even though the hotel was reasonably full and nicely decorated, at dinner on both nights, I felt alone in a room full of people. It was the first time I was spending Christmas away from family and friends -- and the feeling wasn't pleasant. The situation was however, completely out of my hands. So I had to put Christmas as I knew it - on hold till another year.

I hope you won't have to spend another one away from your family and friends

Since then some of my family members have migrated, but there are still enough of them around.

Wow, that must have been a disappointing turn of events! I wouldn't have liked that at all.

The airport on Boxing Day was depressingly sparse of people. I imagined everyone at home having fun with their families.

@Gita17112016 Well, the trip couldn't be avoided. I had to transact some business for a sister who was at home seven months pregnant.

@Kandae11 I can't imagine how it makes sense to fly out so late? I'll prefer to remain at home than take the chance of getting stuck in a hotel.

It's so lonely indeed when during Christmas you aren't at home with your family to celebrate it with them .

I can't imagine how that felt but I know many retired soldiers who can.

That is true - soldiers spend important holidays away from home serving their country.

Actually, that incident happened some years ago, but I always remember it -- especially at Christmas time.
