It's that time of the year again - long, dark evenings, twinkly lights, interminable queues at the supermarket checkout... It is a time when all in this house get together of an evening, with some drinks and nibbles, to watch "Hogfather", the 2006 Sky Movies film adaptation of the book of the same title by the late Sir Terry Pratchett. The story itself is about belief, and about a tradition that bears a remarkable resemblance to our Christmas. The story starts simply enough with the hiring by a group who call themselves The Auditors of an assassin to seek and terminate The Hogfather. Here's a clip of a brief moment between Susan and her grandfather, Death, voiced by the late Ian Richardson, showing how traditions can be misinterpreted if taken too literally...
A scene in which Death's tender side is revealed, after helping save humanity's ability to imagine and create.

I have enjoyed a few books by Sir Terry Pratchett and, judging by the clip you posted, this movie seems an interesting view.

@pgntwo I am going to download the movie and burn a DVD. This is something I make white often, I have a program to create professional looking movie DVDs, I use a spare computers because it takes hours, but it's worth the effort.

@LadyDuck That sounds like a good idea. I bought the DVDs as 2-disc sets as they came up on offer or sale in Amazon over the years... and was since given the same DVDs all in one box as a gift a couple of years ago, it is still unopened. I did not expect to find all of the movies in their entirety on YouTube, funnily. Ah well. Enjoy the film, it is quite fantastical, I watched part of one recently with French subtitles on YouTube also.

It is all on YouTube, but is a long film, split into two parts - I have it on DVD, makes for a good viewing over two evenings. His book "Going Postal" also works quite well as a film.

I've never heard of this before, now I'll have to see if I can find it on HULU or Netflix. Now you have me wondering if I would have interpreted the original Bible the same way as it seems to be translated

Ah. Interpretation of that mighty tome has been patchy over the centuries... If you find the film on Hulu or Netflix, my job here is done :)

Patchy is an understatement @pgntwo I think we'd all be shocked if we learned to read the original in it's original language.

@pgntwo That's a remarkable line about the world being filled with so many wonders yet people say they're bored. I wish I had time to ne bored sometimes.

I thought so too. I am reading a book of some of Pratchett's earlier journalistic work - he was most observant, in a way that many are not. Here's a sample chapter I found, if I have not already shared this with you...

Love a bit of Pratchett. Must re-read some of his books next year.

He has some real corkers - I wonder if any more will make the transition to tv or cinema?

That sounds like a good movie. I haven't read that book.

That shouldn't be a problem, the screenplay does a pretty good job of continuity.

I have read a couple of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books; I like his dry wit. Might need to check out this movie--thanks!

He had a way of looking at things that many others were too busy to see.
