Grocery Bag Update

I know some people are really against the fee for grocery bags and I voted for it in California. Its really helping to reduce the landfill and I'm no longer seeing bags on the ground. This weekend went to Target and I saw everyone had brought bags some very pretty. Target gives you 5 cents for each bag you bring that you use, so it can save on the products your going to buy anyway. Be sure to use cartwheel,as you don't need a cell phone. I just load the coupons and print out the scan sheet. Also Target Stores accept an internet print, manufacture coupon (Sunday Coupon Insert) and the cartwheel for a product, so you can save 3 times on the product. Use the cartwheel last or it won't work. Many times when something is on sale I can get it free or close to it at Target.

It's a long time that we pay for the bags in the supermarkets here, this to reduce the waste and the pollution.

It certainly has reduced waste. The beach is looking good. Northern California had a big jump on Southern California, as the Prop didn't affect San Francisco and several other northern cities, as already had the plastic bag ban. Some cities in Southern California passed it before the Prop was on the ballot. San Francisco I can see its working quite well and they usually are the ones to bring on things that the rest of the United States will resist like the soda tax even though I think that is going to pass in more areas. I don't drink soda and would vote for it and years ago when my doctor told me no more soda it was hard to stop drinking it. I lost weight without even exercising after giving up the sugar drinks.

@LadyDuck I agree and the state of New York is trying to do something about these issues for years. There is a lot of resistance. Personally, watching me pass the high school kids and I'm a senior lady is bad, as they are panting and many aren't in good health. The seniors have many fitness groups in this area and many over 50 people are getting fit or staying fit based on several of my neighbors.

@Fishmomma I never liked soda, I would surely sign if here they should decide to tax soda, and also garbage food.

Cart Wheel is pretty nice =) Have you reached their perks yet? I am only half way. Not always do I get 5 cents off from bringing a bag. I thought you stop getting that deduction now that its regulated (no free bags?)

I love the perks and save more money today, then when I started with Cartwheel. My husband loves to see the bill go down. He likes using coupons and the checkers are always impressed with his savings.

@infatuatedbby I still get the deduction which is given after the store bag person says how many bags were used to the checker.

Wow, they don't charge for them here. But a lot of Wal-Marts have containers at the front of the store so you can bring the plastic bags back for recycling. That's where I shop mainly.

I am totally against paying for plastic bags just because the money goes to the businesses bottom line, not to reducing waste. They charge 5 cents for each plastic bag. So I do take my own bag when I go shopping and if I forget, I carry my stuff out in my hands. In Canada we didn't have to vote for it , stores introduced it years ago and we get nothing for taking our own bags. Just this year Walmart started charging for plastic bags.

One thing that was on our ballot was where the bag money would go now. The choice was the store or the bag companies and people in California picked the stores. How well this will work for the entire state I'm not sure, as its really new. We get points at one of our major grocery stores to lower the price of gas when we bring our bags to Ralph's. Whole Foods also gives money for bringing bags. I wouldn't be happy with nothing for bringing bags and think this is why it ended up passing here.

i dont know about this whole plastic bag thingy. the bags we were using before broke down quicker. the ones we are having to reuse cost 10 cents, state set the price, and take a lot longer to break down. what id like to know, is if over time, will the savings from not supplying bags to its customers, will that savings be passed on to us? and why 5 cents? why not equal value, 10 cents for every new bag, 10 cents for every bag i supply. how about a quarter for bags mades of cnavas/cotton/denim. all im saying is BRING BACK BROWN PAPER BAGS !

I would like to see equal value also. We were getting 5 cents before the passing of the bags, so that didn't change. Stores giving money wasn't in the ballot measure. San Francisco has had the bag fee a long time and I saw a lot of people with bags last time we went there.

I was bringing bags before the ballot measure passed and with the heat in this area most of mine are insulated or freezer bags, so they keep food frozen for a couple hours.
