Dolly Parton put on successful telethon for the Smoky Mountain Fire Victims

Two weeks after the devastating fires in the Smoky Mountains, Dolly Parton once again came through to help her 'family'. Dolly considers anyone who lives in the area family, but as well all know she does have a huge 'real' family. When we lived in Sevierville we had a neighbor who was her aunt through marriage.
Anyway, 'Smoky Mountains Rise' as the telethon was named, was to raise money for the families who lost their primary residences in Sevier County. That number is somewhere around 1,300 families. Many of whom are living in shelters or in motel rooms. There is a housing shortage as you can imagine.
During the telethon large checks were dropped off by various organization and companies such as The Titans, CMA and others. Those checks that were handed to Dolly during the telethon totaled over $2,000,000. It will take a while to add up all the donations that were called in, texted and donated online to Dolly's foundation.
The Dollywood Foundation will begin handing out checks to those families Thursday. Each family will receive $1,000 a month for six months. It may not sound like much to some of you, but to them it is a fortune.
The latest numbers:
. Homes/businesses destroyed/damaged: 2,400
. Damages estimates: Five Hundred Million Dollars
. Deaths: 14
. Number of lives changed: too many to count
Not everyone can donate, but everyone can say a prayer for the people, my neighbors, in East Tennessee. Thanks.
Photo is mine from around the time we first moved to East Tennessee.

Dolly really rose to the occasion in helping out her "family." This makes her head and shoulders (and chest!) above other celebrities as she singlehandedly did this while others just talk or write a small check.

Her chest was standing proud last night LOL. Many of the country stars donated big time like Kenny Chesney, but he's an East TN guy too.

I watched about the first half of the telethon. With all the stars and people phoning in to donate I am sure they will do well. They said there was 160 phones and all busy constantly. That is great. Dolly is a dear person.

I was replying to your comment earlier and when I hit comment my computer shut off - weird! Thanks, that was 15 years ago. An iconic location for a photo - millions have been taken at that spot. It's the NC/TN border. Windy as all heck up there but beautiful.

I think it is awesome that Dolly did this she has a great heart. As for those punk kids that started this I hope they get hit hard. I feel so bad for the people that have no homes at the holiday times becausd of this and not only that the ones that lost their lives because of this.

I could live, easily, on 1k a month, that's more than I make now. now with a family it would be harder, but still, that is indeed a big deal

You can't live on that amount where they live. It's the most expensive county in the state. They need to have money to rent a home, if they can find one to rent. They lost everything - think of starting over but without a home to go to......that grand will fly out the window. Lots of those people work at min. wage jobs, shard apartments with others and housing is hard to find. the money they get from Dolly is a start, a handsup - maybe they can by their kid a toy or something new to wear...

@AbbyGreenhill I have a feeling there is no good places to live atm. If I didnt have kids, I'd consider a used camper and a long term park place. done it before. not fun, but can be done
