One of the biggest Face palm movements.

It happened few months ago. I had to travel from New Delhi to Ludhiana (a city in Punjab State of India) and had to return after two days of official work. I decided to travel by train. Before I elaborate further, here is a little background - while getting my online reservation done I noticed that there were two superfast trains with the same name viz. Rajdhani Express from New Delhi to Amristsar and one train was in the morning and one was in the evening from New Delhi. Parallel trains concurrently run from Amritsar to New Delhi, one in the morning (departs Amritsar at 6.00 am) and one in the evening (departs Amritsar at 6.00 pm). These trains touch Ludhiana. In my mind I thought that I would travel to Ludhiana by New Delhi – Amritsar morning train on Monday and would return on Wednesday by evening train. I got my reservation done from New Delhi to Ludhiana by Rajdhani train which had to leave on Monday morning and got the reservation done by evening Rajdhani Express train from Amritsar (which leaves Amritsar at 6.00 pm). After getting the reservation done, I did not check the tickets. Here I may add that Railway authorities follow 24 hours clock, instead of using am or pm. For example 1300 hours is 1.00 pm. I reached Ludhiana along with one of my colleagues on Monday. I attended the official work on Monday to Wednesday and we came to Railway station in the evening to catch our return train. However, when we reached at the station, we noticed that the time of arrival of train at Ludhiana was 6.53 p.m. in our ticket but the time of arrival by Railway screen board was showing 6.51 p.m. I did not suspect anything and I thought that 2 minutes difference is a minor thing, although I told this difference to my colleague but he also did not pay any attention. I may also add here that the train stops only for 2 minutes at Ludhiana Railway station. The Rajdhani Express train which started from Amritsar at 6.00 p.m. arrived at 6.51 at Ludhiana Railway station, as scheduled, we had already taken our positions and immediately boarded the marked train coach and headed towards our reserved seats. We had booked our tickets in AC Chair Car. To our astonishment, two gentlemen were already there who had occupied our seats. Our seat numbers were 49-50. When we asked those gentlemen to get up, as these were our seats, they showed their tickets and said that seat numbers 49-50 were allotted to them. I wondered how Railway authorities could make such a silly mistake and felt perturbed. We immediately called Train Ticket Examiner to sort out the matter. He saw my tickets and their tickets and started staring at me, as if I am biggest fool on this earth. He said – “Sir, your tickets were meant for morning Rajdhani Express train (which had earlier left on the same morning) and not for evening, so you just cannot travel by this train.” When I closely checked my tickets that train timing were mentioned as 6.53 a.m not as 6.51 p.m. and I felt so bad and embarrassed. Remember this happened within two minutes and we had to take our call, we literally jumped from the train with our handbags, as we had no other option. When we become normal, we tried to analyse our mistake. We realized that instead of booking 6.00 p.m. train which actually departs at 1800 hours from Amritsar, we had got our tickets booked in the train which leaves at 6.00 a.m. from Amritsar. We did not think that 6.00 p.m. means 1800 hours, as per Railway timings. It was a silly mistake but what to do, damage had already been done. It was one of the biggest face palm movement of my life. Have you faced any such experiences in your life? Image Courtesy - Google

Yes, I had to get our tickets cancelled immediately and had to book tickets for next day morning train. Also, had to made arrangements for our night stay over there. We came back next day by same morning train, which I had mistakenly booked for the previous evening. The train runs twice everyday. Any face palm moment, which you could recall, which happened with you?

@dpk262006 I know there have been a lot but none I can think of at the moment. And I've never heard them called 'face palm'. Isn't that interesting? Another cultural difference. :)

@dpk262006 Oh of course, I understand now - but I still don't recall hearing the expression. Mostly I try very hard to forget my face palm moments. :)

Mistakes are a part of life (I have made quite a few) hopefully we learn from them. However despite the unscheduled over night stay and your embarrassment on the train, things turned out okay.

What a predicament! I hope you were able to reschedule fairly easily - oh and I suppose you and your friend had to make arrangements for that night. I guess it's one of those moments where your face feels permanently red and you wonder over and over how could that have happened. I tend to get paranoid when it comes to scheduling . . . I check, recheck, and still get stressed out that I may have not checked things thoroughly. Though not as big of a deal, I almost had a moment like that the other week. My daughter goes to an art program in which if she absent 3 times during the year, she is out of the program for that year. She had missed 2 days already - both for other important commitments she could absolutely not miss. So she can only miss 1 more day. Well, there was a big gap in November where no art classes were scheduled, on top of the Thanksgiving holiday, and I had marked on the calendar all the days off. Upon her return to class after a long break, I looked at the posted school calendar in front of the building and immediately got red in the face. As it was a bit confusing, I actually thought we had missed the previous week of class when we could have easily gone . . . and I was worried for a few minutes that she would now be kicked out of the program. I was thinking how could I have missed this date when I had checked and rechecked so many times before? Well thankfully I discovered I had a certain detail incorrect in my head when I read the calendar initially - all was well - but still that moment had my heart racing.

Yes, it was very embarrassing situation and my face was definitely red and there was no way to hide anywhere. There was not much difficulty in making boarding and lodging arrangements for that particular night. As we were on official trip, I had to simply request the concerned officer in that particular place for making arrangements and he understood my position and made the necessary arrangements. It is good on your part that you check your scheduled appointments time and again and still sometimes you feel that you have not adequately checked. I think there is nothing wrong in checking twice or thrice because our mind is occupied with so many thoughts at the same time that we are liable to commit mistake, if we are not alert. Thanks God! it was wrong calculation on your part and your sister did not miss any art class and nothing adverse happened.

@much2say If you make sure that everything goes as per schedule, there is no harm in checking tickets etc. twice or thrice. It could save you from embarrassment which you may face, in case there is something wrong in the tickets.

@dpk262006 Believe me . . . there are moments I wished I could put a bag over my head! Oh I'm glad they understood and you could make new arrangements pretty easily . Sometimes trying to reschedule things can be a huge hassle, but luckily you did not have to go through that. Maybe I am a little too paranoid in checking/rechecking too many times. Just shows I am not confident with what checking details the first time .

Oh my goodness, what a bad embarrassing moment. Except when I write for this site, I always use the 24 hours European time, our railroads would make the same mistake because we do not have 6 p.m. here, but 18:00.

Yes, it was embarrassing moment for me and left me flummoxed. We need to be very careful about timings (am or pm) when making booking/reservation for either train or air journey, else we could land in a difficult situation.

@dpk262006 I always check everything at least a couple of times, if you miss the right time it can be a problem.

@LadyDuck It is better to double check, rather than not cross checking due to over confidence. We should understand that we are not infallible.

Seems like an innocent mistake. If you were not accustom to the 24 hour clock then you will have mistakes like that. I felt the Train Ticket examiner could have been more sympathetic. Why do train only stop for two minutes?

We are accustomed to 24 hour clock but even then the mistake happened. May be I did not double check when making the reservation. May be I was in a hurry or may be was over confident that I won't commit such a mistake. TTE had no option because it was an AC Chair car and all the seats were fully occupied. He was not in a position to adjust. Moreover, if we insisted, as per rules, he would have charged double the fare, as we didn't have the ticket of that train. It was a Premium train of Indian Railways. Such trains cover the distance in short duration than other trains, therefore they stop at some of the stations, which come on the way, for two minutes only.

Yes, it was an embarrassing situation. I do not expect myself to commit such kind of mistake but it happened. Neither I nor my colleague checked the tickets till we actually got into the train. Did the same thing happen with your uncle? Any face palm moment, which happened with you?
