My New Year resolution

It must be around 50 years since I last made a New Year resolution. It always seemed such a pointless tradition because every year people would resolve to give up something that they like, which naturally resulted in the resolution being abandoned within a few days. However, this year I have reason to make an exception. As some members will know the demand and restrictions created by my eye treatment made holidays difficult to take, mainly due to the problem of fitting them between appointments. The year I have made a resolution not to spend the whole year stuck in Manchester, but to make the effort to take at least one or two holidays before 2017 ends. The bulk of today has already passed, which means there are only 364 days left in which I can manage to take a break. Rather than risk allowing apathy to evolve and watch the year drift by, I decided that I should start now as a safety precaution. I have just booked a 1 week trip to Tenerife. This will not take place until 9th January, but at least it means that I should manage one holiday this year. Hopefully I may even manage another before the year expires.

Oh my, you are incorrigible. I'm casually looking at holidays myself, will probably be booking soon. Tenerife should be pleasant now.

I love the way that you criticise me then admit to be planning the same.

Tenerife was an interesting place to visit - the only one where, 10 minutes from landing, I was peering out of the left-side window of the aeroplane at eye level with the side of Mt Teide, Tenerife's volcano.

I also like Tenerife. In fact, I like all 3 main Canary Islands.

@Asylum Only been to Tenerife, the trip is a touch long compared to the Costa Blanca for a family goliday... And the sea there, the Atlantic, is cooler than the Med for swimming in.

You make me laugh, one holiday booked another 9 more to get it, it must be a nightmare planning the logistics of it all.

Yes, so do I. All three major islands, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are very different, but I enjoyed them all.

I love your enterprising outlook as the Year starts. I dont do resolutions either, but last year I decided to coach myself forward with a kind of incentive "BE CONTENT" I managed quite well, not looking for anymore from life than what life had to offer, even if it meant foregoing some dreams. This year I have decided to "re-invent" myself, with keeping in mind, three years to the pensionable age.

@Inlemay That was the age for women in Britain until they began campaigning for equality. Along with equality came the retirement age of 65.

I hope that you succeed with the contentment plan for a long while. As for 3 years to a pension, that seems unfair. I had to wait until I was old before I could retire.

@Asylum I would rather wait to be old to retire but in SA you are classified OLD and retired at 60 - in most companies or businesses

Have you been to the Canary Islands before? Do they have beautiful weather all year long, or does it get cold there in the winter like the rest of Europe? I guess if it was too cold there, you wouldn't be booking a vacation to that location in January! haha Anyway, I hope you have a great time!

Yes I went to Tenerife in November one year and the weather was excellent. In fact I have been to 3 of the Canary Islands.

@Asylum 10 holidays in a year are pretty good but I thought your eye problem made it difficult to go on holidays. Anyway hope your new year resolution will become a reality

That sounds like a rather exciting holiday to be taking. II'm sure you'll enjoy it. My new year resolution is always to do something I've never done before. It's never been broken since I started making it many years ago.

We are retired and didn't manage to take as many camping trips as we thought we would. This year I hope to take a long camping and sightseeing trip to the east coast of the US. I have never been farther than Pittsburgh east, so it must be time.
