Shoveling Snow

I’ve been out shoveling snow this morning. It wasn’t hard to shovel except where the snowplow created a mount. The worst was the cold. It was seventeen degrees Fahrenheit, (-8º C) which wasn’t all that bad. It was the wind. It was gusting up to twenty-five miles per hour (40 km/h). That made it feel like minus three degrees Fahrenheit (-19º C). I shovel for about fifteen minutes than came into the house and got warmed up. It took me three trips out to get the job done. Anyone else enjoy shoveling snow this morning?

From what I've read the wind makes a huge difference to how people 'feel' the cold.

Yes, it used to be called "wind chill," but now they say "feels like." I think this change came about because people didn't understand wind chill. If it's 40º F (4.4ºC) and there is a wind blowing at 25 mph (40 km/h) then you have a wind chill of 29º F (-1.6º C). What this means is your body will lose it's heat at the same speed it would if it were -1.6º C. It does not mean it is freezing. If you were to put a jar of water out in these conditions the water would not freeze because the actual temperature is above freezing. (4.4º C). Many people thought if the wind chill was -1.6º C then the actual temperature was -1.6º C when it was actually 4.4º C.

@RichardMeister I'm glad you explained this as I didn't understand how wind chill worked or what it really meant. 'Feels like' would make more sense to many people.

Sounds like you got a good work out shoveling all that snow! I would love to have the opportunity to shovel some snow as we never get to do that here, but well, I suppose it's a chore when you have to do it all the time. I think it's cold when it's windy here . . . I can't imagine how bone freezing the wind must be during negative temps. Brrrrrr.

@RichardMeister Oh - I didn't even think about the rooftops ! I think I'd be more afraid of sliding off the roof! I'd like to make snowballs up there and throw them at the neighbors down below . It's actually raining quite a bit here - raining for days now - it's supposed to be wet all week. This is very weird!!

You want to shovel snow. I've got a job for you. I'm thinking I'm going to have to get up on the roof and shovel the snow off it before winter is over. Hope you're not afraid of heights. We have more snow coming in this weekend but it's supposed to warm up above freezing by Sunday and possibly rain. Then I understand there is another cold spill coming in about the middle of next week but I don't think we are supposed to get the winds. One thing about the cold weather–it zaps the moister out of the snow making it lighter.

@much2say My roof is rated to hold up to 3 feet of snow, but if it keeps snowing and don't do some melting I will have to get up there and shovel it off. When I bought the place I could have had a roof put on that would hold up to 6 feet of snow but I didn't think that was necessary. It would have cost $6,000 more. But now I'm wishing I would have got with the higher rated roof. I probably would never have to worry about shoveling it because it is very unlikely we would get 6 feet of snow. I don't think you would make the neighbors happy if you got up there and threw snowballs at them. Besides that, I think you would be more likely to fall off the roof if the neighbors started throwing snowballs back at you and you tried dodging them.

Today I'm hoping the sun will melt it instead of shoveling. But it's only 22 degrees out there so I doubt it.

I had to shovel both yesterday and this morning. We're supposed to be going into another cold snap this week.

I was lazy and did not go out to feed critters until after 11. The answer is no. No I did not enjoy my journey down the driveway road with hubby and the garbage toter. He didn't enjoy it, either.

We are in another very cold spell but they are talking about snow and the possibility of rain by Sunday.

I can't believe people have snow!! It's been about 56 degrees where I'm from. The grass is still green a lot of places and there are budding trees. Of course, this isn't normal for my climate, but it's rather enjoyable.
