Just Made a Nice Dent on My Bookkeeping

Every day I am resolved to work on my bookkeeping some, but I will usually check out my notifications first and then get stuck either here or playing a few games and never make it to the business stuff. While I did a little better this past year keeping up with everything, I still have a lot to make sure it was notated correctly and I need to make sure nothing was missed since my computer problems back in September. At that time I lost a lot of work because I'd not saved things often enough. Barry told me a way around that, but I didn't wait for his reply because I needed to get payroll done at the time. I've only been working on it an hour this morning and have everything in three nice piles. Once I have this portion done then comes finding all the expenses and I'm sure I've not kept up with much of that at all and that could take a bit longer. In a few minutes I'll be oft to Planet Fitness to exercise for about half an hour. I did go after work on Tuesday, but I want to use the treadmill for a bit and can't if I go after work. First thing in the morning is best while I still can bend my knees. No sense in using the treadmill if I can only limp along. Now, wouldn't that look funny? I hope to tackle my work again upon my return, and then maybe I can take a decent break to spend time with everyone here before heading off to give my sister a break with my mom. I know that I've not gotten back to everyone that visited my last couple of posts and intend to rectify that later today or tomorrow before work. Hope you all have a great day and stay warm or cool as the case may be.

@MarshaMusselman Sounds to me it's progressing nicely... You're on the last quarter of the year! I was hoping I could round up my December end-of-month reports by today, but it looks like I'll need till Monday to do that... By then it'll be mid-month January already, but with all the holidays it'll still be acceptable...

Not at all, but I'm much closer. I got the first months of the year rechecked to make sure it was all in properly and then got May through July done. I finished August earlier this week and September yesterday. October is glaring at me, but I'm looking the other way at present. I did go through loads of papers that I had on the side and threw out what wasn't needed anymore so that's one other thing off my plate. Once I finish all my invoices and payments, and deposits, then I need to go through loose papers for all the expenses I may have missed. Along with that I also need to begin working on inputting the figures for the w'2's for everyone as that needs to be out to them before months end.

@BelleStarr It's a bit easier than the regular bookkeeping though, for I only have to input the figures correctly and the site does the rest. When I went there, though, I thought at first that I'd have to resign up for being able to do everything on the website for it removed all services from my name for some reason. But, then I discovered I could still do the W-2 right then, but other service I might need in the future I'd have to re-sign up for. Things like double-checking a new employees ssc info with their name and such. I don't use those every year so that's probably why it got pulled. It almost gave me heart failure for a moment there. I was glad I didn't wait until the last minute in the month, but all is good.

I've continued to make a lot of progress since the day I wrote this. I got the W-2's done last week and been distributing those. I still have to finish October, Nov and December before I can schedule my taxes for last year with my accountant. I normally don't get that done until March or April, but I'm hopeful I can get it done mid February before my surgery so I'll have one less thing to think about.

I got three months done yesterday along with doing other thing here and elsewhere and I got another month almost finished today before work. I was off by sixty dollars and after checking each figure twice against my bank statement, I finally found the discrepancy right before leaving for work. I plan on finishing that off tonight and then if time I can begin August's figures. I'm also making sure I take a minute to backup things after getting a month or so in, so I won't lose it all a second time.

Oh, my! I knew you had computer problems recently, Marsha, but I didn't realize you lost some of your work... I do hope you can recreate it without too much problem. What was the way Barry told you to use to get around saving your work? (I'm just curious. I plug into a three TB drive once a week, but I also save onto a flash drive daily, then when the weekly save goes off okay, I clear the flash drive and start again.) Good luck with your paperwork! I hope your mom is doing much better now?

@DaddyEvil I've not switched over to windows ten. Nor was I trying to access microsoft sites, but rather a banking site and a work site. As far as the training of the nurses, they've been trained there's no doubt in my mind there. Part of the problem is that they have another individual that needs major assistance too and even though the nurse to resident ratio is better than anywhere else, when they both, meaning residents, need assistance at the same time it makes it more difficult. My sister and sil were there yesterday at the same time. The two nurses were able to get my mom up to her walker and walked her from the kitchen to the bathroom and then from there to the living area. That's the furthest she's walked for several weeks now and a big improvement. She also didn't complain which is also rare.

I'm glad you made a dent in them. I'll be doing taxes for the first time in three years as I finally have an income to report from last year, so that should be interesting.

Was that from the sale of one or more books? If so, I hope some taxes were taken out for you so you won't have to pay any or much in.

@MarshaMusselman I didn't make much from books. No, I got an inheritance last year, plus the money I got from the house. So with that, I know I'll also need to claim those royalty checks, not even $100 from the past couple years, along with what I've made from here and Swagbucks and my Social Security. It all adds up.

"Once I get last year's work done, I'll have a couple of months free before starting all over again. It's easier to remember what happened if I'd get at it each month or shortly thereafter.

@paigea If I'd get myself to do it right away, then I'd never be behind, but no matter how much I try I'll do fine some weeks or days and the rest of the month goes to pot. What makes it especially difficult is when customers that normally pay with a check pay that time with cash for I don't have anything to show for it that way. I do pretty good keeping track when certain people owe us money.

@MarshaMusselman I know. My record keeping is pretty simple. I just need to keep track of what I've spent and what I've been paid. I should just record it immediately and not have to go through a pile of receipts to figure out what I did

Do you have your own business that you are doing the bookkeeping for?

Yes. We own a cleaning business. We mostly wash windows for both commercial and residential customers. We make more money with the residential, but the commercial brings us a little bit each month and into the winter when we're not doing many residential at all. We've run this business for about twenty-five years and normally have two to three employees when we're busy. I do the invoices, expenses and payroll along with paying the taxes for the employees and business. We do have an accountant that keeps up with the tax laws and puts our business info together with the other job we both have. So I don't have that headache too.

I'll have time to get it done by then, but I'm trying to get it done sooner than I normally do. I'd like to finish it before my surgery the end of next month, that way if we get anything back we can use it to help supplement whatever I will get for short-term disability from work. Plus, I may not be able to sit at my computer much the first few weeks after my knee replacement.

I use Excel for my budget bookkeeping and it saves what ever I am doing periodically so that I rarely lose very much, of course mine is not at the large scale you probably use.

Especially when I put it off for months throughout the year. Even when I do get parts of it notated, I never take time to get it all done. It's been even worse these past three years since I've gone full-time at my cashiering job.

Thanks. I really need to figure out some way to get it caught up each and every month. When I find discrepancies from a previous month, then it messes up my reconciliation reports for the current months. I also have a few ongoing customers that tend to wait longer than I'd like to get their payments out. After a while it's hard for me to know whether I missed their payment or whether they never sent it in the first place. If I got it done each month or at the most two I'd keep better track of those and re-bill old work again.

I did make a dent, but am double checking that nothing got missed before filing away each months invoices. I've done March through May thus far. I just hope to continue in this vein for a few days before going to work at noon tomorrow and later on Saturday. Otherwise, my nice piles will get messed up and it will take me longer to get back at it again. I'd like to get at least through August by Monday if possible.
