A Bird-Bath and Steve Irwin

One of my recent posts showed a golden lady poised to dive from a pole in a lake. This is at the entrance to Laurance's Wines near Cowaramup in Western Australia. I am going to do a slideshow of this winery as I have enough nice photos to make it worthwhile. In the meantime I thought I'd post this sculpture of three cockatoos sitting on a bird bath. The sculpture is dedicated to Steve Irwin, the 'crocodile hunter' who, it seems, was better known overseas than he was in his own country. Whatever Australians might have thought of his showmanship, he was certainly devoted to Australia and its fauna. Personally, I blame him for half the world thinking Australia is full of deadly creatures - and I'm only half joking. However I did like the bird bath. Do you remember Steve Irwin and did you watch his TV shows? His daughter, Bindi, was in the US version of Dancing with the Stars. Various myLot members would sometimes mention her performances.

I would always race on by when I saw his show as I surfed the channels. Here in the US we have all those alligators in Louisiana. I went to a crawdad festival with a neighbor and at the festival, along with crawdads, barbecued alligator meat was offered. I didn't eat any of those foods, but sure enjoyed the Cajun music! That's a lovely sculpture! Will you post your slide show on YouTube? I'd love to see it.

@JudyEv He made his presence globally but sad that he had to die that way.

he was loud and arrogant and often seemed to provoke animals who were otherwise not in attack mode but he was always fun to watch

@JudyEv the film he did was rubbish - a real monument to his vanity

@arthurchappell I don't think I ever saw his film. If I did, it was forgettable.

He was very 'out there' wasn't he? It isn't much of a show if animals aren't doing something that at least appears dangerous.

I always thought he was a tad off center and if he was normal he'd still be alive.

@AbbyGreenhill She has done really well. She had at least one children's TV show of her own in Australia.

I remember him, but I never watched his shows. I've heard of Bindi, but knew nothing about her on Dancing with the Stars. It's not a show I watch.

@just4him She was apparently a big hit in Dancing with the Stars in America. I'm not sure she didn't win it.

@fishtiger58 He was much more flamboyant and flashy than many Aussies could cope with comfortably. We're usually a bit more understated whereas he was full on and many thought him a bit of a joke. Sad but true.

I knew Steve Irwin best because he did a few episodes on The Wiggles which my twins were huge fans of. I think we owned a video tape of the Wiggles with Irwin.. and Bindi was on that show too, she was like 3 years old or something.

Beautiful photo of that fountain and the dedication to him. He was one heck of a guy. Always in one program or another that are replays from before. Its almost always about Crocs or Aligators but that is what he got people interested in.

I blame Crocodile Dundee and Steve Irwin for all the rubbish that 'others' believe about Australia and our dangerous animals. But at least it means less people to share our wonderful country with.

@JudyEv My interest in Australia grew out of the wave of movies from the late 70s. I was never into Crocodile Dundee or Croc Hunter but Olivia Newton-John!
