Garage door openers: A burglar's way in?

Our local police department says that there has been an uptick in burglaries. One of the ways it has happened is where the burglar has broken into parked cars in parking lots, stolen the garage door opener, taken the registration from the glove compartment, then walked right into the driver's home. The police are suggesting that it is a good idea to keep both your registration and the garage door opener "on your person" to avoid this problem. Personally, I think that most garage door openers are a bit bulky to put in your pajamas pocket at night. Do you have a garage door opener? Keep it in the car? I do or did maybe. If you keep it on your person, is it likely you will be answering it when your cell phone rings? Those are just odd things that occurred to me as I read the article, but this is apparently a trend in burglaries.

One time, just for fun, I drove around my neighborhood with my garage door opener and pushed the button at every single home, just to see if my garage door opener would open someone else's garage. I felt a little bit reassured that my opener did not work on anyone else's garage. But, I'm willing to bet that if I had driven around long enough, I surely would have found someone else's garage door opener that was programmed on the same frequency as mine!

I have done that occasionally too, but got no responses. I am sure it could happen.

Even when we had a car our garage is old-fashioned. To open and close the door we had to do it manually. I can just imagine someone shouting hello, hello into the door opener while trying to raise the garage door with the cell phone

That would be a very funny thing to witness.

I am so blessed not to have a problem with finding a place to store my garage door opener. I just leave it in my garage..... Alas, there is no garage...so no need of a garage door opener.

Thieves are always coming up with new tricks. Hopefully we are out of the way enough to dodge most baddies. You can't see our house from the road but of course if thieves do come here, others can't see them either. And there is a group that suss out small properties and take ride-on mowers, generators, etc.

There is no escaping risk. We just have to be aware of what is going on around us.

I haven't even had a garage in over ten years, when I was living with my girlfriend at the time. We didn't even think of that then. Probably wouldn't now, either.

The house I'm renting now doesn't have a garage, just a carport, but when I did have a garage I kept the opener in the little door in my car's console. I've been doing that for years. One of the ways I kill time standing in line or waiting for anything is to imagine different ways to commit crimes. Sometimes I come up with something that is feasible so I take steps to prevent that particular action and it is usually something that I soon see on the news! Another thing I always do is stay look around the garage on my approach and also a quick scan of the inside before I pull in. Then I keep my doors locked and engine running until the garage door shuts. I've been doing that for years and sure enough, a few years ago it was reported that people would quickly sneak in as the door went up and attack as the person got out of the car. I also keep my insurance information in my purse, not the car, in case it is broken into and someone can get my address. My car is completely nondescript and anonymous and nothing inside can identify me to someone breaking into it.

You have thought ahead of most of us who keep our registration and other info and openers in the car. Some people even leave checkbooks in cars.

I have heard of this happening before. I think the police have a good idea. It is what I thought of also before reading this. Not the registration though. That is a good idea. We have a lot of 'jockey boxers' around here this time of year.

I do not have a garage door opener, but I did hear about this a few years ago. The police here have been preaching never to leave anything in sight in your car.

I think they are saying to keep the opener with you when the car is unattended in a parking lot. At night you could leave it by your wallet or another place in your home where it would not be forgotten. We don't have this issue as our garage is not attached to the house. Items stored in our garage don't hold much value aside from the snow blower and lawn mower.

Those with attached garages are at risk when the opener is left in the car anywhere really. You could probably sell a snow blower pretty quick in Canada if you happened on one in someone's garage.

That's too bad. :-( I agree, a garage door opener is a little bulky to cart around
