Today I worked on Lesson 5 of the Master Class writing course I signed up for the other day. This lesson was the best yet. The subject of the lesson was research. They say your impression of someone else's intelligence depends a lot on how much they agree with you. Based on the, at least regarding researching for a novel, James Patterson is a genius. As he went through his list of suggestions I realized I am already doing nearly everything he recommends. I have to say that made me feel good. Two of the things Mr Patterson recommended that I am not currently doing are (1)-actually visiting some of the places I have my characters visit in my books. The reason for this is cost of travel and time available. Google Earth and the internet help fill in these gaps for me. (2)-interviewing experts on the subjects I'm writing about. To some extent I do this, but not in any official or formal way. For the new story idea I'm developing for this class, I plan to change my approach and interview both our school psychologist and guidance counselor, provided their game. I'm also getting some great feedback on the three story ideas I posted in the class forum. One classmate already wants to know more about one of my ideas. She's hoping I follow through and turn it into a book because she wants to read it already. Well, that's how I spent most of my day, working on my classwork. Now I plan to spend some time here on myLot before I devote myself to working on my other story in progress. Oh, the photo, it has nothing to do with the class. That's just Stripes, one of our front porch squatters, following me down the road yesterday when I went to take pictures at the creek. Have y'all been keeping busy today?

@DWDavis It wasn't too bad. It was busy but it went by pretty smoothly.

@Happy2BeMe I prefer busy days to dull ones. They pass so much more quickly. I love being engaged with my students and working hard with them all day. The days the are taking tests or assessments seem to last forever.

He'd do me more good than any of the agents I've corresponded with thus far.

I've read the books Jean Auel wrote and became curious how she got her ideas. I was amazed that a lot of what was in her books came from archeological digs she had a part in. It must have taken her years to get all that material together just to create her first book.

I liked the first 2 books, she was so descriptive that I probably could have learned how to knap flint just from her explanation @DWDavis I read them in the late 1980s and early 1990s ..... somehow I think I am that old

I read the Earth's Children series years ago. So long ago they were contemporary novels rather than ancient historical fiction. Okay, I'm not really THAT old. It was a long time ago. I'm not sure I ever did read the fifth and sixth books.

Doing light work. I've heard about the class and the co-author contest he's doing. I can't afford either. Like you, I do email/online research and sometime call or snail mail for research. Maybe someday I'll travel to visit my places in my stories and do in-person interviews.

The most interesting email research I did was to write to a pub in England I learned about from a member here on myLot. The current owners wrote me back and gave me the whole history of the pub and how it got it's name. I'd love to be able to visit in person.

I can get quite excited when I'm reading a book and I start recognising maybe street names, even shops, of a location so I think visiting an area is a good idea if you're able. I'm glad it's going so positively for you. Stripes looks a nice cat. :)

I set my stories around Wilmington, NC and the beaches close to it. I grew up there and spent most of my days as a teen at the beach when I wasn't in school. My fictional town of Buzby Beach is based a lot on Carolina, Kure, and Wrightsville Beaches.

I have been busy today. I went to work and after work, I did some errands, after which I´m back online finishing unfinished mini projects. My day finishes when I get home at around 8:00 p.m.

Awww, Stripes is lovely. I love research, it's something I'm particularly good at, but not when I'm writing. *sigh*
