I will have to return it

We were trying to save time and energy . . .our own. My printer needed a new black cartridge, so while hubby was merchandising inside Wal Mart today he got one for me. The very last one on their shelf. I sat down to change the cartridge, but had trouble opening the box, It had been taped shut. Very inconspicuously. I pulled the plastic tray out of the box. It was missing the plastic film that seals it shut. I lifted the cartridge and the little piece of plastic that goes over the ink jets had been replaced, at a ninety degree angle. Chances are, if that last little bit of tape had been put back the way it belonged, I would have taken my chances with the cartridge. With it being improperly sealed, then not covered as well, I am really skeptical that there will be ink to be used. I think it will be dried out. Hubby will go to another Wal Mart to buy me another. Next Monday when I have to be in town I will make the return, show the service desk what I found. Giving the store the benefit of the doubt, I am going to suppose a cheating customer ripped them off. Otherwise I would have to suppose it was knowingly put back on the shelf in an unsatisfactory condition. These cartridges are not supposed to be returned after opened, but it was not immediately noticeable to me, and possibly not to them either.

It is either that or the store is trying to deceive us, or the people at the desk and working electronics do not know anything as basic as the fact that you can dry out a cartridge that way.

@katsmeow1213 since I know many of these people at this store I really lean strongly toward it being a customer ripping them off.

@GardenGerty Could be any of the above.. my guess is someone replaced the cartridge with a used one.. or bought the wrong cartridge and didn't realize until they took off the tape, then tried to replace the tape without thinking.

I hate stores that sell off used items as new. I am currently looking into buying myself an inkiness printer. They have them and they seem reasonable. Brother makes one and so does Epson. The paper is the magic with those printer. But I think it would be way better.

@GardenGerty Either way. They should have checked the product. But some stores are so busy I guess they can't.

Sounds like someone returned the item and told them that the item was not damaged or used and they just put it back on the shelf.

Yes, it does. It seems like they might have said "oops, I got the wrong number, and returned it when actually they had replaced the new one with their old one.

@GardenGerty I purchased a new clothing rack about 6 months ago. When I got it home I found that one side was missing. The box didn't appear to have been opened, but makes me wonder.

My guess is that someone bought it, swapped out the old cartridge they had for the new one, and brought it back to return it. Too much work went into putting it back in the box like that for it to have been done in store, especially with the way it wasn't obviously taped shut. You should be able to return it at any Walmart store, not just the one you purchased it at.

My thought was that the other Wal Mart store might believe I was the one running the scam. Returning it where we bought it, and where we have a connection will be more believable because they know us.

@GardenGerty That's possible. At the same time, though, I think most stores only consider it a problem if it's something a person does multiple times. Or they should, IMO... automatically assuming the customer is trying to pull one over on you is a bad attitude to have.

someone got the wrong one, and carefully taped it all back up, or it was messed up at the factory. too expensive to take the chance for sure

I honestly think someone put their used cartridge in and returned it. It is too sloppy to be a bad cartridge from the factory. I will return it on Monday.

Yes, just to get away with it if they could or to get some extra cash in pocket.

Definitely sounds like the people doing returns never took time to investigate the item and knew it was not returnable or someone was somehow able to slip one back on the shelf like this and took the right one or something. Personally if the one your husband took it from is close, I would take it back to them and show and explain what happened. Hoping when you return it they will be on your side.

Don't you hate when things like this happen? We realize merchandise is not inspected before it is returned to the shelves.

Until I looked really hard, I could not see the tape on the box. I imagine that it was returned during the Christmas rush and there was nothing to indicate it was bad. Once I make that return, I imagine they will start opening the cartridge boxes to inspect them.

I always buy toner at Staples. Once I bought some x brand toner and it messed up my printer so bad I had to buy a new one.

My printers do not use toner. I used to try to refill cartridges, years ago, until I saw an investigative report that basically proved it did not save money and as you say could mess up a printer.

It is amazing what some people will do to rip off a store. If they would use that creativity in some useful way, they would be millionaires most likely.
