A Toy from Scrap

These has been a bit of chat on some posts about reusing various objects for new purposes, in particular creating mail 'boxes' from various items. I thought I'd share this 'toy' which is made up of all agricultural parts. The photos have been posted before in Bubblews but hopefully most of you haven't seen them or have forgotten about them. Our friend made this 'whatsit' for our son and he had hours of fun on it. A plough disc is buried in the ground and holds the thing steady. A heavy spring connects the disc to a large piece of pipe which is the seat. Smaller pieces of pipe are welded on to form handlebars. I think shortly after these were taken, he went straight over the handlebars but all was well and he was soon back on it.

Looks like a see saw to me. And children prefer these kind of things to the real ones.

Much more fun and greater exercise than computer games. Home made toys are always enjoyed because they are custom made by dad or a capable uncle.

It's not quite the same as the whole thing moves back and forth. Certainly our boys thought it was great fun.

@41CombedaleRoad I think you are right. It is creative to make up something like this. Creativity in a larger format but still creative.

My parents didn't buy us toys. Instead they bought us books. Most of my toys were hand me downs or made by me and my dad. We used old cans for cars and trucks. I had paper dolls too. And match boxes for blocks.

@diosabella When we went shopping I never bought the boys a lolly at the checkout but I would often buy them a Little Golden Book. Did you have any of those?

Our children didn't have a lot of bought toys either. Things have changed a lot since our son was a child.

@JudyEv So true! I really love the new toys and gizmos but I dont think its healthy for children who bury their noses with the latest mobile app than go outside and play. I still think that I'm lucky in my time.

@JudyEv and think of how much parents waste these days on toys that break or fall apart in a very short time!

They would rock on it for ages. We moved it once to the next house but then left it behind.

@valmnz My niece has three children and every room is overflowing with toys. It's almost obscene that they should have so much.

Great picture. It's amazing what can be made when we use our creative skills and not our what can we do with this skill that just ends up in a trash heap somewhere.

We had those animal shaped things at our park when I was growing up. I remember playing on them. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't there anymore. Parents have become so cautious about safety they probably insisted they be removed.

People and councils are very worried about accidents and litigation nowadays. It wasn't such a big deal back then.

Your friend is very skilled at making use of the waste material. The whatsit must have given your son a kick then.

They make similar commercial items like this now but I love this one. Both our boys had a lot of fun on it.

What do you call that toy? Reminds me of those small rides in malls for kids. That's very creative

I'm not sure what you'd call it. It doesn't really have a name. I guess the commercial ones do but I don't know what it is.

@JudyEv Oh, I'd definitely have fun with those, even today as an adult--with no one looking, of course.

I can personally vouch for the fact that adults were too heavy for it and it would just topple sideways. This was a great disappointment.

I love recycling, upcycling or whatever people call it now, I hate wasting anything so I try to make something useful out of something useless.

It gets to be a challenge doesn't it? We find a use for many things here. There is very little that is wasted.
