Making food last longer in the fridge

I am a subscriber of The Dollar Stretcher, an online newsletter for frugal people who like to save money. Readers can also send in tips of their own and I find those really useful. For instance, I love cottage cheese but it always went bad before I could finish the carton. I tried freezing it but that changed the texture and it was good only for use in casseroles as a cheese substitute. Buying individual serving sized cartons just cost too much money so I saved cottage cheese for a rare treat or when I expected company to share it with. One reader a few years ago shared her experience with cottage cheese. She found that if she stored it upside down in the fridge, it lasted twice as long and even well past the expiration date. I thought that was a bit silly but tried it. It worked! It doesn't matter if the carton has been opened or how full it is, just store it upside down and it will last twice as long as usual. (If you're interested, the Dollar Stretcher is very useful and it's free. If you submit a tip that they use they will even send you a few months of the print version as a thank you at no charge. I re-gift these at Christmas and they are much appreciated.) Do you have any unusual ways that you use to make your foods last?

I don't buy any fresh food I work in a kitchen and in my contract it says they provide all meals whilst on shift. I take full advantage and as I rarely have more than one day off in a row I just buy pasta

That's a huge savings for you! I'm finding the price of food getting unmanageable. I wanted some beef for some homemade stew last week and had to make something else as beef is unaffordable right now. And you get yours free!

@dragon54u the job is minimum wage but the perks add serious money. In the 4-5 months I've worked there I have spent less than £100 on food. I get staff meals every shift but as I work in the kitchen I get to eat some seriously nice and expensive food. I've had a burger with a menu price over £30...$35 Gym, swimming and personal trainer for free. The price of food really is getting high so where some complain about a minimum wage job I'm pretty thankful to have the job that I do

@Mike197602 That sounds a pretty good deal - basic wage notwithstanding.

Nothing unusual, but since things are getting more and more costly I think I'm going to need all the advice I can get to save on household stuff!

Things are bad here, too. I was going to make some stew last week didn't because I couldn't afford the meat. Everything is sky high!

I read once that when you get liquid on the top of cottage cheese or sour cream or yogurt, etc., you should always stir it back in rather than pour it off. I wonder if when it is upside down, the whey that is separated and goes to the top, is now on the bottom when you turn it over again and that makes a difference?

This is a very good tip. There are some things I like but my husband doesn't and being able to keep these items long enough for them to be consumed is not always easy.

I used to live alone and didn't want to pay for single servings because I'm a cheapskate. It's easier now that I live with my DIL and granddaughter, things rarely go bad. But I still store the cottage cheese upside down!

Thanks very much for the tip. At the moment I am trying to keep things like tomatoes out of the Fridge so they are more eatable. Meaning they have more chance to thaw out on the inside.
