I was trying to help my daughter set up a Yahoo email account. I fill out the required info but it won't take our landline telephone number. So, I went to call Yahoo. Big joke there. My old number I had was disconnected which I thought was rather weird. I looked it up and found the disconnected number listed first. I must have called five toll free numbers before I finally get a woman with a foreign accent answering as the Yahoo Premiere Support. I tell her our problem and she says "Yes, there is a number I give you to put in But" and she continues to tell me that there are NO free email accounts any longer. If you have an old one that is fine but no free new email accounts are allowed. I asked her when this happened and how much an account cost. She said since December 28th. The amount for a new account is .........are you ready for this? ......$125 one time fee. This is because of all the hacking in of people's accounts and so many customers calling in about it. I remember having people hacking into my account on AOL back before the milineum and they sure didn't do anything about it then! Did you know about this change? I had heard nothing about this until today. Nothing in the media or anything.

That's quite a ridiculous amount for opening an e-mail account. I don't know how they will be able to get people to register since there so many free e-mail services nowadays.

It's all of them. No more free ones. And it is a one time fee.

A little more digging (sorry for the double post) and I find that there was an old scam in 2013 where people with poor English were charging yahoo users for help. I wonder if this is some other version of this, or if you somehow got on a phishing site, or called a fake support person?

She did have an accent. The Yahoo number that I had down had been disconnected so I went to BIng and searched for a Yahoo help desk 800 number. Then I got her.

@Rohvannyn .....Yeah, I think that the gal I spoke to just didn't realize I was talking about a home account not a business and she gave me wrong info.

I have a yahoo mail but recently I tried to set up another one but they wanted my cell number so I didn't bother. There was no mention of a fee. Gmail is a lot easier.

That's what got me to calling in the first place. I didn't have a cell number to put in. It is getting more and more difficult to set accounts up anywhere without one.

@celticeagle I wonder if she was talking about business email or premium email? According to Wikipedia, the basic service is still free.

@Rohvannyn .......Perhaps so because she said 'premium' But, I told the gal I was just setting up an account for my daughter. That wouldn't sound to me like a business account. So, maybe she was having a blonde moment and gave me incorrect info. She could have given me a correct number.

I hadn't heard about it. Strange it would cost so much. I have a yahoo account. I don't use it, but I have it.

I think I got the business help desk now that I think about it. The rep I spoke with was not very forth coming and she failed to tell me this even though I had told her I was trying to see up a email account for my daughter. I would think that that would not sound like a business account.

You should check into it if you want to keep it. All email accounts are doing this.Outlook, and all others too I guess. One time fee for security purposes.

@celticeagle Yahoo never deletes email accounts - the one I got rid of was over 14 years old. Outlook doesn't charge you. Yahoo doesn't charge you either. If you have an internet service several free email addresses come with that too.

@AbbyGreenhill .....I went to several and they are all money based now. Yahoo was my standby. I like how they filter emails and a few things like that.

I'm finding that out. I think I was talking to the wrong department. Somehow I got the business side and not consumer. And, the rep wasn't with it enough to pick up on what I was saying. I told her I was trying to set up a account for my daughter. Does that sound like a business one to you?

I think this was on businesses only and the rep I talked to wasn't paying attention to what I had told her.
