The price of heating a home can become very costly especially with the long cold winters. How do you heat your home and what have you done to reduce the cost? One thing I do is turn down the heat when I go to sleep. What about you?

We only heat the areas we use, which seems to confuse some people for some reason. Why would we warm the entire house all day if no one is using some of the areas? At night the main heat is on 60F which is more than enough, as each room has warmers and heaters that can be adjusted as needed by the person using the space.

Yes, if no one is using the room why heat it? I would just keep it at a temperature where nothing would freeze.

Well, I'm not home in the winter anymore. We have three zones. We lower the one upstairs where the bedrooms are, not to save money, but because we like it cold in the room when we sleep. Heat rises from downstairs, too. Since we aren't home, the temperature was lowered from 55F to 53 by our son, who checks on the house.

We have a wood fire and it is shut down at night. It doesn't get cold enough here to need much heating.

Well, a warmer climate helps a lot to keep heating costs down. Is your electricity bill reasonable?.

@1hopefulman We think it is quite reasonable. We have gas for cooking and we rarely need air-conditioning in summer.

That is a good question because I've had to go without heat in the winter for a few years. Used a blow dryer heater and the like. Candles in a tin can. We have an invention that can heat a whole house for ten dollars a month, the energy companies wont like that though. Solar energy could also do the trick.

@1hopefulman The radiators for the apartment do not work. The owners did not want to put money into them so we had to provide our own methods of heating. I have our own radiator and a smaller one and a heater like in the picture. Now, since it has been very nice I do not use the heat.

Have you had to use the heaters at all since you've lived there? Here, from November to April I would be in a lot of trouble without heat.

@1hopefulman Yes, we use them in the winter and recently got another and have not used that yet. It gets very cold inside our apartment. Inside buildings here is is cold in winter so we have to have heating.

Because here we don't feel the extreme heat as other countries, we don't necessarily have heaters in all homes.

The heating is included in the rent I pay, but I can turn it down, especially if the weather gets warmer. Better keep rent low, if we can lower the costs..

Yes! Also the heating is probably not so healthy for us as it is not natural. So, the less we heat, the better!.

Do not turn to very hot temperature. And it is better that the window is closed and the heating will not leak.

@GraceOrr No, in my city there is no heating system. People used to think that it is not cold in the south, but it is wrong. Since it is moist, you will feel colder in winter here.

Also wanted to ask if u heard of the egloo? I want to buy one. It's like the.other candle heaters with a round shape. They are professionally made and those are much safer. Better to buy them formally made. Im going to get one!!!

@db20747 The reason I'm not concerned right now is because I don't have a problem paying my electricity bill of $50 dollars a month which includes heating, lights and running electrical appliances.

Have you heard of the tile heater? Was reading that it saves 60% on heating costs, is more energy efficient than anything or system we currently have, And is an ancient way of heating homes. It saves wood and doesn't need that much wood to burn!!! What do U think???

Yes, I have heard of it but have no experience with it and of course you can only install it if you own the home.
Before installing that new floor in your bathroom consider installing the Warm Tiles system first! It will ensure that you will never have to walk on a cold ...

Have u ever heard of the clay pot heaters? You take two terricota pots with holes in the bottom, and put a piece of aluminium foil over the hole in the bottom and turn it upside down. You take the second pot, a little larger that the first and put it over it. Set in on metal. Lite a candle under it and the first pot inside will get really hot and air will exit the hole from the one on top. Like a radiator. One man said he heats his room for 8 pence a day with it. What do U think?

I don't know how practical it would be in a real cold country. I don't know if I could stand the smoke caused by the burning candles. I saw this on YouTube but I don't know and will not use it.

@1hopefulman the thing might catch fire. One day I want to experiment. I want to see how I can keep a bedroom warm without electricity. Especially if things go out due to a storm. I don't know, u might need Two or three of them and also my candles I'm a Tin can. What do u think of heating bricks or stones or coal and putting them in metal pots to keep a room warm? I'm very fascinated with this subject!

Here, wood stoves have been banned because of the pollution they cause. Homes are either heated electrically or by natural gas.

We have gas heating, our heater automatically reduces the heat during the night.
