No, I didn't go in on a Saturday to make up my missed hours

Our school district has decided we will make up the two days missed because of icy road conditions early this week by changing one teacher workday into a student day and by making 3 early dismissal days into full days. Since teachers would have had to work these days anyway, we were given the option of using leave time to cover the two days off, or working full days this Saturday and next Saturday. My missus and I talked it over and, after looking at my available leave balance, and taking into account the things we wanted to do today and a prior commitment we have next Saturday decided I would use leave time to cover those two days. As a result, I will have to work two days longer when I retire 7 years from now. Today, after getting up early to let the dogs out and feed them breakfast, my missus and I headed out to breakfast at our favorite diner. Our second stop was at the RV Center to pick up a replacement taillight for the one I broke washing our camper a few weeks ago. The taillight had to be ordered and took a while to come in. Then it was into town to see if the pet supply store in town carried the line of dog food we use. We had been buying it at Pet Smart, but they discontinued selling it to make room for Rachel Ray's Nutrish Dog Food. My missus had found a place online to buy it and have it delivered right to the house, but they stopped stocking the larger bags due to a dispute with the manufacturer. They still stock the smaller bags of the same food. The pet supply store does not carry the formulation of the food we use, though they do carry other formulations of that brand. It looks like we'll just keep ordering multiple small bags for the time being. Our next stop was the mall so my missus could return some boots she'd bought from the website of one of the stores. The boots looked real nice, but did not fit well. She could not find another pair she liked so took the credit on her gift card and will spend it on something else. I go to spend a while in the Target Starbucks while the missus shopped there. Managed to write a whole scene for the story I'm working on in conjunction with the writing class I'm taking. After that is was to the home improvement box store to pick up a few things and price a few others. When we finally got home, we took down the last of the outdoor Christmas decorations. I know, about time, huh. Soon we will be off to Saturday Evening Mass and then out to eat at my favorite Mexican restaurant. I hope y'all are having a productive and/or restful Saturday.

If the snow day winds up being optional for teachers but closed for students I will go in most of the time. In earlier years, I would have gone in on these Saturdays. Not anymore.

What are you expected to do for a full Saturday shift? You aren't teaching students. Grading papers? You can grade papers at home. Why do you physically have to be at school?

We are expected to grade papers, write lesson plans, file student work, catch up on professional reading. Mostly we clean off our desks, sweep our rooms, work on lesson plans, and talk to each other about what we'd be doing if we weren't there at school.

Sounds like you had a full day. You made me hungry for Mexican food. Haven't had any in a long time. We still have our small Christmas tree up but will take it down tomorrow.

We were going to take our decorations down last weekend but the ice storm made us decide to wait a week.

I think one of my teacher friends in Michigan has Snow Days tacked on to the end of the academic year. Over here in England children have to be in school for 190 days a year and teaching staff for 195. If the school is closed for any reason, nobody has to work an extra day. I much prefer our way of doing it!!

I might write about our Saturday shortly. It was just about worth writing about. :)
