What Political Issues are Most Important to You?

After I wrote the article on my plans to attend our local sister March on Washington in Orange County, CA, @Moffittjc mentioned that men need to get involved in important issues, too. This made me curious about the different issues which are important to everyone here. To me, I support Mom's for Sensible Gun Laws. I am also for Universal Healthcare. As the mother of four adult women and the grandmother or three young women in their late teens and twenties, I want to see them all have equal opportunities ... equal pay, affordable childcare for working women, equal opportunity, and the right to make their own healthcare decisions. Having high quality, affordable education is also important to me. But what about the rest of you? It seems as if our country has become fractured. Everyone has different things which are important to them. It seems to me this is the reason why our country is so divided. This made me curious. What issues are important to you? There are no wrong or right answers ... and the answers will probably be different for people in other countries. That's OK. I just wanted to know the breadth of the issues which are important to different people.

I've wondered if men were allowed in the women's march- I know that sounds a little odd but my husband has been involved in the feminist movement. He is concerned about women as well as men. He helped start a women's engineering group in college.

Men are welcome here in Eugene and in DC as well I have read. Numbers are important.

@sallypup - Yes, men are allowed at the Women's Marches across the US and, I am sure, in some other countries. One of my daughter's husbands was going to go with her, but has to go to a business meeting that weekend. I'm sure there will be many men there.

As you might guess, your causes are my causes as well. I see no differences in our thoughts. I fear for our democracy in the mistakes made by certain parts of the electorate which resulted in the election of a blatant narcissist with no regard for the office that he will hold or for the principles the US was founded upon.

@JamesHxstatic - I agree with you completely. My husband does, as well. I am also disappointed in people who voted as they did ... not just in the general election, but in the primaries. How could they choose that man as the best, they believe, of the Republicans? It is sad and, if I were a member of the Republican establishment who had run for President, I would consider it insulting.

@DeborahDiane Yes, at least insulting. They were a sorry lot though and the worst rose to the top.

@JamesHxstatic - I agree ... the worst rose to the top. I still have trouble understanding how that happened.

You pretty much listed my top issues, I agree with you on every one of them. I also consider the environment and climate change to be one of the most pressing issues of our time. If we don't at least try in every way we can to take care of our planet, none of those other things are going to matter. I'm also for criminal justice reform, the end to voter suppression which I think played a role in the recent election and the protection of civil rights for all races and LGBT rights.

I agree with you on all these issues, especially caring for the planet. If we do not do that, nothing else will matter. We only have one planet.

I'm off to bed now, but wanted to give a quick comment. I'm for equal rights, social welfare, social security and Medicare, health, and of course education. I'm going to bed. I'm sick thinking of what's to come in the next four years. I hope I can sleep. Goodnight.

@DianneN - Those are all worthy causes. I hope that all of us will be able to have a few peaceful nights of sleep in the coming years. Get your rest now, while you can.

I think the most important issues to me are liberty and personal responsibility.

@Rohvannyn - I completely agree that those are important issues, too. That is one reason why I accept gay marriage, support equal rights, and am pro-choice ... people should have the liberty and personal responsibility to make their own decisions on those things.

@DeborahDiane Exactly. Similarly, I think people should have the right to spend the money they earn in the ways they see fit, defend themselves from attack, be able to open businesses and be be successful without interference, eat food that's clean and healthy, read what they want to read. You know, unpopular rights. :)

I guess health and education are the big issues for me, and looking after the disadvantaged.

@JudyEv - Those are all very valuable issues. Health, education and caring for the disadvantaged are things every country should strive to accomplish.

@jstory07 - Yes, I agree that everyone should be treated equally. I live in a very racially diverse area. It shocks me to see what happens in other parts of our country. I agree with the poster that says, "Women's Rights are Human Rights." So true.
