A SNAKE FOR A PET?

I am afraid of snakes of any variety, so it is hard for me to understand how anyone could want one for a pet - but as the saying goes -- "different strokes for different folks". Up until I was six years old I lived with my parents and siblings on one of the many islands along the Essequibo river in Guyana, South America - and to this day I remember the incident of the snake and the school. One morning, just before the start of classes at the island's main school where I was a student, we heard a man shouting outside. He was trying to alert us that there was a huge snake slowly making its way up the eighteen or so steps which led to the school's front door. To make a long story short, my father who was the school's headmaster at the time took care of the intruder. During our six years living on that island there were many more incidents with snakes - thankfully, we were never bitten. When we moved to the city, the only snakes I saw were those in the zoo. Would you consider having a snake as a pet?

Never! I'm terrified of them. Seeing any snake in my yard keeps me inside for days. My husband's brother was a photographer/writer. During a trip down the Amazon in a small boat, a huge anaconda tried getting into the boat for a ride. He was sent slithering back into the river.

@Kandae11 No, I can't stand her. Lol! I'm sure the movie makers took poetic license. Anacondas can grow up to 30 feet. The one my bil saw was about 25 feet!

@DianneN That is huge! There were large ones on that island, but we left there when I was six years old.

Did you see the movie Anaconda with Jennifer Lopez? Somehow I think those snakes were made to look much larger than they actually are.

Then I don't suppose you would have watched the movie "Anaconda" with Jennifer Lopez. I am not aware if they all do it, but there is a kind of snake which would come after you if you kill its mate.

I find it strange too to keep these creatures as pets. The closest I've ever came to having a outdoor wild friend was with a grass snake. Totally harmless.

@Kandae11 I was young. Everyday I would go out side to play and there was mr green lying on a rock warming in the sun. At first he would quickly slither away at the sight of me. But after many encounters I was able to pet is head. He wanted only bugs and was not a threat to me. ha ha

OMG! but do these snakes understand you are their friend, so that they don't attack you? I think they don't.

@EMuhungi Well I won't say the people are evil -- they are allowed their preferences , providing the "pets" don't pose a threat to others.

I don't like snakes. They are horrible animals to me. Of course I don't consider to have a snake as my pet. There are many adorable animals like cats and dogs, why I have to raise a snake. It is better for them to live in the wilds.

My mother was terrified of snakes and taught me to be too. I was afraid until recently. My daughter had a black rat snake in the attic of her house catching critters, when the critters were gone he came down through the walls and ended up under her sink when I was visiting. She locked the cupboard and when I asked why she said "you don't want to know, Mom" I couldn't sleep that night but I got over it, the Black Rat Snake is very docile and helps people keep the critters like mice and squirrels out of the attics.

@Kandae11 yes, then the earthworm stays in the fish's belly and when you cook, you have to clean the fish and handle the worm? eeewww!
@Kandae11 (57233)

That is why I never tried fishing when I was younger , I couldn't bear the thought of handling those worms for bait.

Oh yes, I have had up to twenty snakes as pets. However I can't have a 'touchy-feelly' relationship. They are cold and slimy and yucky. Cobras are part of my religious symbols.

i do like snakes,but it's really too chilly up here-i'm not sure even a "warming rock" would keep them warm enough. i would make sure however it was a small and harmless type..like maybe a garter snake..they're tiny and cute as hell. a friend of mine had a constrictor and i thought he was nuts..

@kandae11 Under no circumstances!!They are vile creatures to be avoided at every opportunity. We have reports of a cobra near where I live and everyone is on the lookout for it. I hope it is dealt with soon.
