We have decent gas prices compared to other parts of the country. Tennessee has not had an increase in gas tax since 1989 but that is about to change. The Governor plans to raise the tax by 7 percent which translates to about 7 cents per gallon. Diesel will increase by 12 cents. That's not all....it will cost us $5 more to renew registrations. Visitors will not get away easy either since he wants to add 3 percent charge on rental cars. The money is needed for road work. Since we moved to Tennessee 16 years ago we always laughed at how much road work they do here...but it seems they constantly work in circles. Redoing the same roads over and over again. We call it southern humor, keep the drivers guessing and driving in circles. Anyway, they did mention on TV that the governor also plans to lower the sales tax on groceries. We pay 10 to 10.5 percent tax on all food. We spend more on food than we do on gas so it could work out to our benefit LOL! These are proposals, so we'll have to wait for the final verdict. Republican Gov. Bill Haslam on Wednesday proposed Tennessee's first gas tax hike in 27 years to fund an ambitious roadbuilding program that would carry through well after he leaves office in two ye...

We just had a gas tax increase on January first. $.04 per litre. Funny. Gas prices jumped $.15 per litre...yesterday I paid $1.12 per litre. That works our to about $4.28 per gallon.

4.28 a gallon wow - that's expensive. We are at 1.99 in some stations. We had bonus points thru grocery store and got 20 galls @ 1.69 a gallon.

@AbbyGreenhill We're holding steady right now about 2.21 per gallon, but by tomorrow I'm sure it will go up twenty cents or more until it begins to drop down before the next increase.

I read that snow and ice makes the roads break up every year. Is that what is happening in Tennessee?

@JudyEv - They do treat some of the roads in anticipation of ice mostly but just main roads. Many of the road issues that we see are from the big trucks...around traffic lights the ruts in the roads form them braking. If we get 5 or 6 inches a winter that's a lot and it melts the same day.

Snow, ice and the salt they use on the roads to help people stay on the roads. But probably Tennessee doesn't use the salt like Michigan does.

@AbbyGreenhill In 2016 CT was #4, NJ #9 and Tenn. #45 according to MSNBC. We are taxed on every possible thing including personal property.

We came from New Jersey - the second most expensive state - that's why we moved here.

We pay A LOT in Europe for gas and diesel, but we are lucky here in Switzerland with the tax on food, that it's only the 2.5% on all food, beverages, books, magazines and medicines.

@AbbyGreenhill We pay $5.45 per gallon for the gasoline here in Switzerland and it's cheaper than in Italy where the median price is around $6.20 per gallon. It's better not to forget to buy something if you go out and try to drive the shortest possible distance.

I'd take 2.5 percent on food that would be a bargain. Time will tell. They get you one way or another.

they are raising things and slashing spending (which was needed but not where they took it, like 70% of all the spending cuts was FROM education, that's.... huge) here.

This is a state thing, not a federal thing. He tried this once before and couldn't get it to pass.

@AbbyGreenhill well the educational cuts in MO are state related, everyone expected cuts, but all over, not just, oh look I am going to slash the budget to educate our children by over half.

5 dollars to renew registrations, you mean to get plates for the car? We pay 110 in Illinois to get our plates every year. I do know that you guys don't have to get plates for your trailers, boats and rv's I think is what I heard. Anything that travels the roads in Illinois has to be plated. Trailers and boats, only cost 18 a year. Ooops I reread, 5 dollars more, I just got new glasses tri focals for goodness sake, not seeing so good here yet lol.

You only get new plates when they issue them - ours were changed about 8 years ago. We pay car registration every year and we get a little sticker with year year that is put on the plate (or tag as they call them in the south) Right now I think it is $21 so an added 5 isn't much in the long run. RV yes, trailers no. When you move from county to county here you have to get a sticker with the county name and you have to get new registration and new license....92 counties in this state and hey all operate independently.

@AbbyGreenhill Yes we get the stickers too we just had our plates replaced as they were 21 years old and starting to rust. Only some counties in Illinois do you have to get a sticker for that county. The county stickers in Cook County which includes Chicago are now over 100 bucks a year. I moved out of Cook County about 15 years ago. The county I currently live in has no county stickers thankfully.

@fishtiger58 Some counties have a 'wheel tax'...meaning you pay, it used to be, 25 per vehicle. You get a sticker for that too.

That is too bad, but with the tax on food being lowered, it looks like it will all even out.

If they lower the tax on food it probably would be only a percent.

Paying taxes on food never made sense to me. Also, taxes on personal care items, hygiene products, paper goods just does not make sense to most. Luxury or unnecessary items should be taxed. Now, who gets to decide what those are? Paper towels? Chocolate?

Living in this state 16 years we are quite used to paying tax on food. Of course, we do have low real estate taxes and since a big majority living here are renters I guess the best way to get tax money is on food, since everyone needs to buy it whereas not everyone owns property or cars. I gladly pay tax on chocolate.

We got a new tax on our gas recently too, probably in November, but I don't remember when it finally showed up. It's either seven cents or nine cents per gallon. They also raised our tags for our cars and all for the roads here too. We already don't have tax on foods other than ready to eat deli meals and such. We've never paid tax on that though. When the gas tax first went into effect the gas prices jumped thirty cents, much more than the increase would have been had they kept it to that.

We are close to the source so our gas is usually cheaper than most parts of the country. Gas prices are like playing the stock market!

That's a high tax on food. Wisconsin doesn't have a tax on food, only fast foot. Not groceries. Our state tax is 5.5% so your food tax is twice what our state tax is. Not having a hike in gas since 1989 must be a record.

Wow, sounds like what happened in my country recently. The Rowley Government came into power and immediately put VAT tax on EVERYTHING. Food, gas, medicine...every thing went up overnight. And there was absolutely no need...we are not a poor country.
