Attention New Yorkers! Is This Really True?

I heard today, from a New Yorker, a very interesting bit of trivia, but I’m still questioning whether it is true or not? I’ll have to do some research on this one. He told me that the Brooklyn Dodgers got their name because, in the early 1900s, Brooklyn pedestrians had to dodge the trolley cars and that’s how the baseball team got their name, first as Trolley Dodgers and then shortened to just, Dodgers. Is that really true? It sounds like an unlikely story to me? What do you think?

I guess there are other stories around that are more unlikely. I'll read the comments with interest.

Yes, I'm hoping someone will confirm this story. I haven't been able to find anything else about it.

I wondered if it has anything to do with trolley car fare dodging. Did baseball pay well in its early days?

Not really. Compared to what baseball players earn today, the early players didn't earn much at all.

I had never given it much thought, but what came to my mind was "The Artful Dodger" from Oliver Twist. A little more of a shady character.

So far, no one has offered a confirmation to the story.

I do not know if that is true or not. You never know.

I'm hoping that some New Yorkers will respond and let us all know.
